Please help paint my bathroom door

It was originally red lacquer and then painted with white latex. Should I just replace it? I tried to remove the paint with stripper but that didn't take the lacquer off . Can I paint over the door with lacquer after I try to strip again?

Try a stripper called Citristrip. It is safe and non-toxic. Paint will not adhere to the lacquer.

Agree - need the right stripper here - painting over this will only show the same cracking in the new color

Latex paint will not adhere to lacquer. You would need to use an oil based paint. BUT, use Citristrip like Janet says to strip the latex paint. Then sand and clean the door. Use a shellac based primer like BIN then you can paint with latex paint.

I agree you definitely need to clan and sand it so the paint will adhere to it. Good luck!

I see this is an interior bathroom door...you can strip it down if you choose but it is definitely a huge backbreaking task! If that were mine, I would just purchase a new one, there are many styles and it would not be all that expensive and who would not want something shiny and new???

Jan, tongue in cheek, I think the answer to your question is all those who are in love with "shabby chic."

Paint or varnish remover won't work on lacquer. Try using alcohol or lacquer remover.

Unless you are Morticia Addams, or living in an antique garden room at Martha Stewart's place, make it into a garage/storage shed shelf and enjoy picking out your new one. You use this room a couple times a day to feel clean and fresh, this would make me feel ''çrungy" .

Hello, I think you can sand it down if you don't want to work with strong smelling strippers. right now the crackle effect paint is trendy. But sanding will prep the surface to accept paint.
