My roof is growing things - Does it have to be cleaned off?

Shingles still look good - 30 year shingles have been on for 20. It hase been really wet so far this year - even the sunny side of the roof has lichens and moss.

It sounds as though your roof is reaching the end of its life span Carol, mildew and moss growth is being supplemented by the materials that the roof shingle is made of. As the growth continues it will eat away at the shingle and cause leaks.

Professional roof cleaning can be done, but you must be careful not to damage the shingles in the process. ...»

I would expect that you will need to replace the roof within the next year or so.

Read KMS article it will offer up some other advice for you as well.

Thank you for your input on this matter. I actually went out on the patio roof - it only has a slight pitch - it hadn't been touched in years. I first cleaned the gutter, swept and gently scraped the moss and lichens off and used hydro pressure to wash all the remaining debris build up away. I have to get to the rest of the gutters and down spouts - Luckily I only have on corner the of the house that is two stories up -- I will have to get help for that one. I will look into the price ...»
