Definitely prune, Dianne. Your plant is losing flavor, and producing less leaves by flowering. Keeping basil pinched back is the key to a vigorous crop. -

I've used the pinched back flower buds in salad...they still have the basil flavor. -
The flowers are tasty but as Douglas points out the more you let it produce leaves the more basil you get. I keep mine from flowering until the end of the season.
