Our garden patio.

My husband and I removed old shrubs, covered the ground with a weed barrier, added river rock and stepping stones. The Bottle Brush tree attracts bees. The flowers we selected are both perennials and annuals that attract butterflies and hummingbirds. We are visited daily by a family of Cardinals. This is such a peaceful place to relax. :)

Sandra R, do you mean mosquitoes? Love bugs are gone. What else do you have in Palm Coast that maybe I don't have here.

Try spraying Listerine around the area where you are sitting or working. It's supposed to help keep the mosquitoes at bay. May work on gnats, don't know.

What a great area for coffee or drinks. Looks like you have some shelter from breezes there too. As for mosquitoes...........now that practically no one ever sprays for them, have you tried a misting system?

Mosquitos are horrible but I haven't yet had problems this year. I have so many water features that I purchased mosquito dunks that kill kills mosquito larvae before they are able to grow into mature, biting adults. Mosquito dunks contain no poisonous chemicals and are harmless to other living things. It just takes a little water to grow mosquitos.

Why the gravel rather than something green?

I heard about the Listerine. We used gravel for water conservation. We are on restrictions down here, even if you use your well, which we do. But in time we hope to have the whole area converted to water conservation plants (green and color). :)

Let's hear it for gardens filled with bees, birds and butterflies! If you intend to do any more planting in that area it is going to be a real challenge with rock plus landscape cloth. But what you have certainly looks nice.

@Becky: Have you priced one of those misting systems? My sister did and ouch! Also, the mist is nondiscriminatory, so even the rep admitted to me it could kill beneficial insects if they were out when the mosquitoes were out.

This is so nice...I love how the shade covers the ares where the chairs are. One thing about this garden is that you can arrange pots and not have to dig to put in annuals in years to come. Nice job!

Jeanette: Now that is a great idea. We are heading out to Lowe's for more plants. I will take another picture and post as this was taken about a month ago. Much prettier now. :)

We have catnip plants in pots near areas we like to hang out. "they" say its stronger than mosq. Repellant sprays. We are in north carolina and have them bad. Have also heard mosquito plants help too. Can get at lowes i think. And old wives tale is place a dryer sheet in your sock (hanging out) or pocket. Anything with odor can help. Even cotton balls with listerine on them. And you smell frsh too lol

Douglas, what the heck were they putting into their misting systems? I was thinking of the type that simply used H2O; this system simply knocks the mosquitoes down. They don't like it, and won't bother with it. Last year, after buying a misting fan, I also found a misting system at Sam's. I purchased that as well. It really wasn't expensive.

@Becky, it uses some sort of botanical oil that coats the mosquitoes, and anything else flying around when the misting system goes off. I thought misting fans were for cooling purposes, not mosquito control. Does it do any good?

Douglas, what I heard was from HGTV when they installed the misting, cooling system on a deck. At that time, they said mosquitoes did not like the mist, and for the most part, avoided them. After that, I first purchased a misting fan, then later, a misting system for our side deck. I've not had the opportunity to use the misting system on the side deck yet, but we have used the fan (last year); not only were we cooled, we were not bothered by mosquitoes.

HI TECH answer: I am only repeating what I read. My original answer was to use mosquito dunks to kill them.

    But,

As mosquitoes have sophisticated heat sensors, they follow body heat and exhaled gases and fly to their target. The exact temperature depends on the type of mosquito. ...»

During breathing people also exhale water vapor and perspiration is produced during active movement. Even small amounts of water will attract mosquitoes as it could mean possible blood source or possible breading site.

Mosquitoes can see their victims from within 30 feet by locating the changes in waves of light around them, caused by moving objects.

Mosquitoes are attracted to dark colors, so wearing dark is not the best thing if you want to avoid being bitten. Dark foliage is another attractant.

Thank you Kim. This was some time ago.....we have added more flowers and the original ones are much larger. It is a chore keeping up with the weeds (even through the mesh).
