Remove clumps by cutting them at ground level with a horizontal cut. The ideal time for pruning is after the new clumps have matured in late summer. Another method of pruning bamboo and to ease trimming is to dig a narrow trench around your stand and check it once a year to see if any rhizomes have tried to cross it.

THANKS FOR THAT INFO. I STARTED A TRENCH, BUT SHOULD HAVE GONE MUCH FARTHER. DIDN'T THINK BAMBOO WOULD MOVE OUT THAT FAST OR FAR

Good luck maybe conceal the trench with a border.

Bamboo is worse than kudzu. Good luck with controlling it. Take a look at this website: http://www.wikihow.com/Control-the-Spread-of...

    Hi George,

This can be a long process. The best way is to cut the bamboo shoots as soon as they appear. More will come back, just keep cutting them. Eventually the energy stores in their rhizomes underground will become exhausted and the plant will die. You can also apply a systemic herbicide to the cut areas to help kill it off.
