Kitchen Command Center
This rustic farmhouse kitchen command center is an easy, inexpensive solution to taming homework clutter. I used things I already had on hand, along with some fresh paint and an end of cabinet which was otherwise going unused.
The faux wood grain on the end our kitchen cabinets was peeling in a couple of places and had always bothered me. I peeled off the loose edges, and sanded it until smooth. Since the finish was slightly slick I sanded the entire end of the cabinet to help the paint stick to it. I then wiped it down with a tack cloth and painted the cabinet end the same color as our walls. It's Creme Brûlée from Home Depot.
I was pleasantly surprised to see how much lighter, brighter, and cleaner this nook looked after being painted. It can be scary to paint something like this without knowing how it will turn out, but I'm glad I took the risk.
Our family calendar was really too small for the area and looked kind of lost being tacked up there all by itself. I had an old DIY chalkboard from a previous project and I thought it would be perfect to frame out the calendar. I used Poppie's Paint Powder with white acrylic craft paint to make homemade chalk paint and then painted the frame with it. I had come to realize that I'm really not the chalkboard type and would never write messages on it so I stenciled a fun design to the top of the board using a chalkboard pen.
We hung a wall pocket folder organizer underneath the chalkboard. Each child has a pocket with multiple folders to hold homework and projects. I also have a pocket designated for papers that need to be signed and returned. Extra notebook and construction paper is also stored away in one of the folders.
A vintage rustic toolbox was given a fresh coat of paint using Poppie's Paint Powder and Sherwin Williams sample latex paint. The toolbox caddy holds a dictionary, thesaurus, sketch pad, and grammar reference sheets. It sits at the bottom of the wall pocket organizer.
