Decorating a small living room

Question

I recently moved  and have a small living room. I need decorating ideas if you can help. The room is very small.

Could you possibly move the table and chairs somewhere else?  Have you tried catty cornering your couch, that might give your room a feeling of more space. I hope some of my suggestions helped.

Moving the 2 seater couch to the other wall where the chair is and out the chair where the couch was... that will open up room coming through the front door.  the Brown Cabinet in the back round doesn't look like it fits well there... try to move it to a garage or other Bedroom to utilize space. also, if thats a dog bed on the floor....move it between the couch and the wall so its out of the way.
these tips should work. i came from a very small house with 3 kids.

I would eliminate the cabinet and use some floating shelving for its contents, possibly  above the table.  I would also go to a slim square table that has a leaf to put down.  Can't really see what the lamps are on but wall sconces help save room too.  If you can sell what you eliminate it would help pay for the changes.  Hope this helps.

If you can move the large cabinet to the wall on the left of the kitchen opening, you can move your dining table down just a bit.  That will at least give you more space between the table, the recliner and couch.  Short of buying all new, small scale furnishings, that is a tough space to work with.  Good luck!

I would definitely opt for shelves eliminating the big cabinet.I think if the couch is moved it may give an illusion of more space.Understanding you need a table how about researching the ones that attach to the wall to pull down when needed and put up when not.

I would make the entire space a living  room  with a coffee table that turns into a dining table. Add some poufs that can work as tables or extra seating.  You  can add one or two other accent seats. I would use the area rug to define the space.

I agree with the others about furniture placement and removing the cabinet. I would also paint the walls a cool light grey, and get a nicer rug. Also, take off that tablecloth and chalk paint the table, chairs, and lamps in a pretty color.  You can also slipcover the couch. I'd use white.  Get away from all that beige. Use cool colors to make it light and bright.

1. Is the fireplace a real working fireplace?
2. how attached are you to the console that the tv is on?
If you get rid of the console and put the tv above the fireplace, put the reclining chair there, at an angle (not up against the wall either) you will free some space on the other side.  If the fireplace is just a decorative piece I say ditch it, move the console over and put the recliner in that space.  
I think the hutch and table are great together but I would not hug the table against the wall. Move out the rug (center it to the room or at least the door way to the kitchen) and move out the dining room table. There is plenty of room to walk around it.  I agree to remove the table cloth, it makes it look a little cluttered.

1.	Move console table and put behind (cute) couch. 
2.	Move table/lamp that you have next to couch.
3.	Slide down couch so it is a little closer to wall.
4.	Move reclining chair and put in spot where console table was, angle it, not hug it against the wall. Put the lamp that was next to the couch next to the recliner.
5.	Put tv above fireplace
6.	Center rug and table so it is centered with kitchen opening
7.	I agree with another poster who said to remove the table cloths. Too cluttered
8.	I think the hutch and table look great together. Don’t move the hutch but do add show off your things in it more.  
9.	Now you need color. I see you have tan and blue. You need a third color….Purple? Orange? 
10.	 Go to yard sales or Good Will/Salvation army and look for some decorative items on the cheap. 
a.	Big baskets that you can spray paint with blue/tan/and third color. 
b.	 Old books that you can stack on the console table and add a plant to add a vignette and offset the lamp on one side. 
c.	Dollar store is great for place mats; pick up some that are in that third accent color or find some woven type ones (in a color?) for the table. Find some kitchen towels that are blue/tan/third color and fold them nice and hang on your oven door for some added color.  If you can get a new kitchen rug in a different color (you know, repeat the colors I listed) it would help tie the room into the other.  
d.	Find at yard sales or Good Will/Salvation Army curtains in some print/color and make into pillow covers or find old colorful sweater that have a pattern/color and recover the three throw pillows on cute couch.  
11.	I would move the pet dish/tray and put it somewhere else. Hey, even next to the wall by the hutch once the rug is moved
12.	Before you lower the picture that you have in the living room ( it should be eye level or even with the console table lamp) repaint the frame so it will stand out and not blend into the wall.  You can use craft paint with a sponge brush.
13.	You could probably do #10 with only $5 - $10.

5.	Put tv above fireplace. If the angle of the recliner still doesn't give you a good view of the tv, try moving the recliner around after you have moved the dining room table farther into the room.
