Learning About Birds (at a "Home" AWAY From Home)

Happy Sisters' Day (first Sunday in August)! It's a special "holiday" for me as I've been entertaining my sister (who visited me here in NYC from Illinois) which is why I have been away from HT for nearly two weeks!
Our escapades included day trips to Long Island beaches (Long Beach as well as Robert Moses State Park Beach) as we both consider beaches to be a home away from home! At the beaches we visited I observed seagulls in very different manner than I had in bygone years, and I attribute this to my fascination with the array of wild birds which visit my garden. The aforementioned birds have been included in most of my entries (as of this date) on HT.
Re my awareness of the behavior of birds prompted me to wonder why seagulls stand on one leg as they are doing in images four through eleven!
And, no, they are not standing on one leg because they need to find a bathroom! It's because "bird's legs have a unique system of blood veins in their legs! More Info can be found on TLLG's FB Page as well as within a post on Blogger by clicking on the respective links:

Another "action" re seagulls which perked my interest was the fact that they flew so low to the ground as seen in images twelve through nineteen. And I've since learned "There is in aerodynamics, a phenomenon called 'Ground Effect.' (The effect of added aerodynamic buoyancy produced by a cushion of air below a vehicle moving close to the ground.)" Moreover, while I always noticed that seagulls often face the same direction (as they are doing in images twenty-one through twenty-six), but I never knew it was because they felt safer in doing so! Info @

My recent experiences have prompted me to suggest to you this: next time you travel to the beach be on the look out to see what the birds that visit your garden have done to your powers of observation re other birds! You are bound to enjoy this activity and so will the seagulls as evidenced by the one seen in image twenty-two who laughed heartily in my new found appreciation of birds by the sea!

It is worth the trip @Alexandra Arena but it is a verrrrrrrry long walk from Robert Moses Beach. I like to walk but if you don't, you might want to see it via Kismet! The LIRR has a package deal until Labor Day to Kismet which includes admission to the lighthouse. Once inside the lighthouse, there are156 iron steps and two small ladders to climb. A sneak preview of what you can expect may be seen in the photo-ops (the first three) with my reply. I think the lighthouse will be finished with iron work soon, but if not you won't be able to go in! You can, however, see the museum and grounds etc. If lighthouses interest you, but the trip to this one sounds a bit much there is always The Little Red lighthouse in Manhattan as seen in the fourth image! Whatever you decide both lighthouses are great for different reasons! BTW, did you know that in two days it will be National Lighthouse Day?
