Fellow gardeners I need your help! Confused Dahlia or Not?

I'm fairly new at growing dahlias and have never seen a blossom look like this. Does anyone know the proper term for when a flower blooms with petals that look as if they should be on two different blossoms?

I'm not a botanist, but that is definitely a dahlia. I've grown dahlias that produce flowers that bloom in one color and then fade with age -- so that there can be three different colors at once. Whatever the scientific name, celebrate its uniqueness!

Howdy NGDM! I did some digging on google and learned that it's a color mutation that causes this amazing variety in the petals of the dahlia. I knew it was a dahlia, but in all the time I've grown them I had never seen them do this! Thanks for the note! Deb Oh, and Happy gardening... I love your header.. Thank you all! I've since learned that what causes this beautiful anomaly is a color mutation in the plant. So interesting. I saw something similar in a morning glory I grew last year as well. I'll see if I can find the image and post it as well.

I think it is called poppers. Swan Dahlia has one that looks just like that one and this is the name of it. I love it.

I haven't seen this with Dahlias, but it is very striking. However, I have had many of my roses go from their original colors to deep reds and currently have one that blooms Salmon colored on one side of the plant and red on the other.

I don't know if this is true or not, but a neighbor told me when I was a child that storing the tubers all together rather than separating them by color/variety, causes them all to revert back to that red dominant gene.

Dahlia all the way and it is absolutely lovely! Dahlias can come in most commonly as tubers dry or already blooming. Just make sure you remove the tubers before first frost store in cool dark location over cold winter, in shoes box or I use paper shreds to store. Meantime be sure to deadhead for more blossoms.
