How could this old storage box be repurposed?

It used to be used to store VHS tapes. How would you fellow Hometalkers repurpose this artifact into something truly useful for the home? Mine is in great shape so would like to do something practical with it instead of packing it off to Goodwill or St. Vincent de Paul. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Paperback books? Silverware drawers? Craft supplies?

Thank You Jamie Boyce -- Great suggestions! Leaning toward the craft supply storage now . . . .

    here is one cute idea

I didn't; I saw it on pinterest photo. any paint/hardware store can tell you what paint to use over your drawer and use a stencil or hand draw the doodless. use for whatever storage you need. the co-ordinating lamp is a 'eye popping appeal'

Thank You Carolyn -- This is really nicely done -- thanks for the idea. However, am trying to declutter all my rooms now, so this would not work for me.

I like the idea of craft supplies. I have oodles of these drawers and hated to throw them out.

Thank You Connie Broussard Richard -- Am definitely focusing now on craft supply storage in my "hobby/exercise room." It would require no refinishing, as the entire room is paneled in cedar shakes, so would blend in nicely!

You could cover it with fancy contact paper or use chalk paint to paint it. Then embellish with trim and cute knobs. If you do, please come back to share the "after"!

Thank You Kyralee -- Great suggestions, thank you! If I could envision a use for it in one of my home's main rooms, I would attempt painting/embellishing -- but now am figuring out how to incorporate it into my "hobby/exercise" space mentioned earlier, where it will blend in without any exterior redo.

Would the larger index cards fit? If so you could make a tickler file, recipes, photo originals, spices, coffee pods, ugly office supplies, sewing thread, the possibilities are almost endless. And yes, please share with us what you do!!

I have one or two of the same VHS storage box Now I just have to hope the hubby did not throw them out.

Thank You Susan Axsom Curtis -- Hope you, too, still have them, to take advantage of all the great ideas posted in response to my original query! On recent visits to my favorite local second-hand outlets, I've noted many of these on the shelves. Apparently their previous owners were stymied like me for how to turn them into something practical/useful!

I would paint it. Maybe spray paint or the chalk paint. Not a fan of contact paper for this. But you could even glue fabric to it as well. The craft stores have fabric glue. Lots of other glues. As far as a purpose, besides craft supplies, tool, screws, etc. , office supplies, maybe even to hold photos!!

Thank You Marge -- You've offered a nice range of ideas for me to mull over! Agree with you 100% about not using Contact paper -- the faux woodgrain finish on this box is perfectly okay as is.

I spray painted my to match my craft room accents and store my rubber stamp pads in it. They fit perfectly!

Thank You Sandra Webster -- Hi, Sandra -- After perusing everyone's helpful responses, have settled for sure on incorporating this thing into my craft room -- no exterior refinishing/painting needed, for my little enclave is completely rustic (walls and ceilings are finished in hand-cut cedar shakes), so this box will blend in nicely as is.

That's great! I have several alike and stack them. Amazing what you can do with a little recycling.

Thank You Sandra Webster -- Loved your follow-up comment! Now that I know what I'm eventually going to do with this piece, am wishing I'd not already given away its twin some months ago -- :-).

I am looking for a way to add some kind of box into these. There are a few things that would fit into the slots but I also want to make some of them into “drawers”? Any ideas for how to add boxes into these? Shoe boxes? I am hoping to reuse something to make the boxes.

    Hi,

Make sides for the sliding shelves using strong card. and use to store lightweight items.
