Tin Can & Tequila Bottle Repurpose

Using up some tin cans and glass I've been saving by adding some paint and sparkle. Great way to display casual clippings.

How to create your own headboard... from junk!

I love to sway away from the norm for most things home. I just find it incredibly inspiring to find a nothing and make it into a something. ...»

So you've got to know the headboards I use in my own home must be rather unique, right? :) The following pictures are found objects I've used to make headboards for my own home. It's a pretty neat feeling knowing I can knock off my own kind of furniture with a few good finds and a little creativity.

How to do it on a budget:

Just look for one big thing or a collection of small elements that will work with the size bed you have. Mount them, snoop around the thrift stores for pillow cases and quilts, decorate, and enjoy your new look for very little cost.

What do you think? Crazy or cool? Do you have an unusual headboard?

(Visit each picture for the direct link to that project.)

  • This is my "totem". I've had it outdoors for several years now. It's held up really well except for the "ladder" incident last fall while a helpful neighbor was helping me clean out the gutters. 10
  • These are the tools you'll need. I use GE II Silicone for Windows and Doors (clear) with a caulk gun.
A level will come in handy to make sure your totem doesn't lean. 4
  • Wash and dry (thoroughly) your glassware. I suggest you let your vases and such dry overnight. If you have ANY moisture inside, it will be sealed inside once you apply your sealant.
  • apply your silicone to one of your pieces, then add your next piece to it.
  • remove the excess silicone with your finger or a paper towel.
*tip* I generally glue two pieces together, while gluing another two pieces together. After those four pieces set up overnight, then I glue the two (or 3) sets together.
  • *tip* to keep water from standing in your plates, turn them upside down. I like to separate my large vases and such with clear plates. A microwave plate makes a great base piece. 3
  • You can use a plate on top right side up to make a bird feeder or a birdbath. 6

Turning a tomato cage into a chandelier

I knew we "needed" a chandelier for the pergola my dear sweet husband got me for Mother's Day but where could I find what I wanted.... it had to be made of old materials and crystals. A quick trip through the garage reminded me that we had a stack of old tomato cages which had not been put to use as of yet. In fact my original purpose for them was to set them in our old cement planters upside down and drape them in tiny Christmas lights for the winter. Well here it was early summer ...»
and they still sat.... old, slightly bent from years of use and just the perfect patina!

Inspiration struck.

The ends were cut down with bolt cutter and bent over to form the top. A spool of old wire was woven in and out around the body to form a cage of sorts. More wire was added to the top for reinforcement. Old crystals and yard sale beads were wired on. The hanging fixture (available at Lowe's) was screwed in place, spray painted to blend in and then the fixture was hung under the protective covering of our pergola. An Edison bulb was added to further enhance the aged appearance. The cord was plugged in, the switch was "thrown"... instant ambiance!

Stop on by and check it out....
