Kitchens: What are the options to vent a gas cooktop in an island?

I know this is an old post but I will share my evperience anyway. I just redid my kitchen a ...»
year ago. It's an older home where the trend at the time was to locate the cooktop on the counter that seperates the kitchen from the family room, and it was an electric downdraft. I had a 4'x6' island where I wanted to not only relocate the cooktop but also change to gas. The kitchen is located above an unfinished basement so the plumber had no problem running the gas line from the furnace.to the island. I already had the duct work to the exterior so he made a few adjustments to take adventage of it. I have several friends that installed the system Yamini spoke of and all of them had problems with it. I chose a kitchenAid downdraft gas cooktop and have been pleased...it takes up less space too. Good luck.

As a Home Stager, we use a product called PURE AYRE. This product removes the odors, instead ...»
of covering them up. Check it out at www.pureayre.com to find out where to purchase it locally. Good luck.

Gardening: Growth On Hickory Tree

This stuff looks like someone put Great Stuff on the tree. Any ideas what it is and do I need to remove the tree? The hickory is about 75' tall.

Thanks.

Evidence of rot. Any other dead wood in tree? Was the tree damaged there in there in the past? ...»
Normally, a given for removal but if the rest of the tree looks good and no other fungus/mushroom areas then might just keep an eye on it.

been a neighborly suggestion to repair it but I would appreciate input from the HT community. Thanks all.

Landscaping: Forgot to mention in the previous post that my liriope still crops up in the yard far more frequently than I want it to.

Sometimes I pull up the new growth, but it's rather serious about wanting to take over again, it seems. Can I spray Roundup on each piece that emerges or is there something else that ...»
would do the trick? Or, is digging up each new volunteer the only way?

I have liriope as well and run over it with the lawn mower at the begining of growing season ...»
to keep it in check...AND maybe get a few snakes in the process!

Landscaping: My front yard is too shady for grass. Tried several times. It would do OK for a while but then die. For a long time the

whole yard was covered in liriope but a neighbor said he saw a snake so that was dug up, given away, etc. Last fall I had the yard tilled, smoothed out and covered in tree mulch. I ...»
separated some hostas from another part of the yard and planted some in the front yard. Bought an Illicium, some azaleas (already had several), a fragrant olive, some autumn ferns, some plantain lilies (I was told they're hosts but they look different from the ones I had), some heucheras and an iron plant and divided it into three separate plants. Put E.B. Stone fertilizer in each hole as I planted. Fingers are crossed about how this will look when the hostas come up since I had to imagine a lot of it. But the question is, should I add addl fertilizer now, wait until things really start growing, or what?

Louise, I must ask...how did your neighbor feel about your liriope yard?LOL... And I agree ...»
with you, only good snake is a dead one. I've already wacked a small one this season. Sounds like you should have beautiful results with the new landscape...just keep your "wacking" tool of choice handy.

Gardening: Wood chips as mulch?

Are wood chips OK to use as mulch in a flower bed? Are they better than bark mulch?

Melissa, I have a load of wood chips delivered from the company that removes trees for ...»
me...saves them from having to take them to the dump. My understanding is, you should dump a bag of 10-10-10 on the pile of new chips and wait a year befor using them. Fresh wood chips can leach the nitrogen out of the ground so perhaps not the best choice for your plants. I will also add "cured" chips to the soil when I'm tilling hoping to loosen this clay!
