About Me:

I love to hit the flea market and come home with goodies to upcycle. Anything rusty, chippy or just plain worn is my passion.

Painting: Should I paint my kitchen cabinets?

These cabinets are about 30 years old but still look good I think. I have been throwing around the idea of painting them a off white colour. It is a hugh kitchen and would be a hugh ...»
job. Or, I could just paint the walls... it is a peanut shell colour now. What colour do you think? Also, I was thinking maybe just change the hardware. Should I have a runner or area run under the table. Any other ideas to spruce up this space would be welcome. HELP PLEASE!!

  • July 9th after a week of record high temps and very little rain...the plants here are loaded with tomatoes inside the cage and full of blooms too!

Tomatoes and their need for water

I started may 28th planting 4 tomatoes around a garbage can with holes drilled in the bottom rim and a second row up about 10 inches... buried the can to where the top holes just barely ...»
were above the ground... put in two shovels full of compost... then I fill the can up with water ever 2 days and try not to water the leaves... these four plants are now 5 ft 4 inches in less that a month and a half and loaded with green tomatoes and about a hundred sets of tomato blossoms...

Salvaged door coffee table/storage bench

We saw some pretty pricey coffee tables made from doors and decided to try making our own. We like $31 way better than $hundreds! You can find a step-by-step tutorial on our blog: http://www.thissortaoldlife.com/2012/03/14/...

  • Before the upcycle. I had to cut the top portion off due to it being beyond repair but plan on usin the glass and some of the wood for another project.
  • Love the piece of metal that was on the door as a repair years ago. :)
  • Sorry about the wonky pic but had to share my goodies.
  • Not much paint survived but what did has given this desk a nice chippy look. There's that $2 card file!!
  • Another wonky pic but this shows the fire grate that I am in love with and the wonderful rusty hinge I left on.
  • Ill figure out how to correct this. Not much of a computer person...

Upcycling an old door to a desk

I got this great door from my Uncle who is restoring an old school house. With the use of my shop vac and minimal sanding the paint came right off. I decided to just stain the door so I ...»
applied a dark walnut stain. I have yet to find the perfect legs and have no patience so instead of leaving the door in the garage I placed it on top of a drop leaf table I had laying around. The OCD kicked in and that is when I realized the desk is just not right with the edge of the table showing. I crossed my fingers, said a lil prayer and sewed a skirt to hide the edge. Not too bad for someone who has NO sewing abilities. LOL Then the fun began, I got up at 5:30AM the last two days and shopped one of the bigest flea markets in my area, Jake's, for goodies to place on my desk. Not only did I find useful items but I got them all for a steal! The lovely metal card file simply had to be wiped down since it was already a great color. Then I found a fire grate that immediatly screamed, "Make me into a paper holder!". The fire grate I sprayed with Muslin colored spray paint and distressed very lightly. The scale also got a good coat of spray paint due to the bad condition the metal was in. Total spent on the wonderful desk- fabric $10 (have 1 yard left to make a pillow), card file $2, fire grate $3 and the scale $5. $20 for a one of a kind desk! :)

  • Love "All You Need is Love" by the Beatles.
The lyrics are hand stamped in red across the white & black striped slats. If you can't find a pallet, you can make one, too.

From Pallet to Art

I have repurposed another dusty pallet and made it something charming and unique!

I used the Beatles lyrics from "All You Need Is Love" and painted the panels alternating ...»

black & white stripes. I put a big light turquoise heart in the center because red would be too obvious.

No, really, because I am loving turquoise this year, so why not a blue heart?

Anyway, I think it turned out really funky and fun.

  • reclaimed and repurposed was the design format for this bathroom. 6

my repurposed bathroom is my favorite project thus far.

the vanity, drawers & pulls were repurpose/reclaimed from interiors of walls, parents shed & vintage faucet knobs. the sink was a free find on craigslist. the mirror was a garage sale find for $3 which was stripped and waxed before hanging. the vanity lights were made using new conduit & wiring, vintage porcelain single bulb fixtures and metal shades bought from ebay. you can see the before / after on my blog, the 1829 farmhouse:
