Wildlife & Animals: Someone is very interested in merry-go-rounds

Just thought I would share a photo of a recent visit by a timid dog to the mall. She was captivated by the merry-go-round. 4 months old.

Wildlife & Animals: Help for Pirelli, a very very special boy.

During the past 20 years, Canine Assistants has visited thousands of schools to help kids understand disabilities. Soon our education teams may be accompanied by a spokesdog with a disability, "Pirelli", a golden retriever born without a paw.

Pirelli is currently on the waiting list for a new procedure which will replace his missing paw with a permanent prosthetic foot.

To make Pirelli's surgery possible, Canine ...»

Assistants is introducing "Fund-A-Foot"; a fundraising drive to pay for Pirelli's surgery and after-care. This special fund will go towards the cost of surgery (to be done at the vet school at NC State when Pirelli is 1 year old), travel, x-rays, CAT scans, exams and replacement treads for life. The prosthesis will be implanted in his leg bone so no padding or straps to secure the implant. It will be permanent with only an occasional retread "paw" when worn from walking. I am proud that Pirelli will be a special spokesdog to show kids that everyone can overcome. I love his name too!

  • Okay, this one is not a falcon but was a woodpecker that made a brief visit.

Wildlife & Animals: Who is this visitor?

I had another good looking visitor to my office window this weekend. I have seen him a few times but this time had a camera nearby. I believe he is a falcon of some sort. A beautiful ...»
wingspread (I missed pictures of it - he flew away while I was headed downstairs to get a better view). Perhaps someone can help me identify it.

Kevin, it is either a sharp-shinned hawk or a cooper's hawk. They are similar in appearance, ...»
with the former being a bit smaller. The other hawks people are mentioning are more full-bodied than yours. Lucky you for seeing him!

The only way to prepare for Mardi Gras! Be one with the dogs!

We're almost finished with February for Canine Assistants at Vino100 in Alpharetta. This Saturday, the amazing rock climbing Blossom will be there as well as a few of her friends. 4:30-6:30 wine tasing. Only $10 and 1/2 comes to Canine Assistants. We had a great turnout last week and 6 great wines to sample.

Home Maintenance & Repairs: Plumbing question about pipe

Some time ago when my remodel was done, unbeknownest to anyone, one of the kitchen cabinet screws went into a wet plumbing vent pipe. The cabinet company has been great and going to fix everything. 3" vent pipe (one end to the roof the other into the concrete to drain to the sewer) and the guest bath does flow into it (with 2 sinks, toilet and shower). The plumber proposes to cut out the compromised pipe but not sure can slide/glue in a solid plastic pipe in the tight space. So ...»
proposes a neoprene sleeve on one end. This will then be buried in the wall between the kitchen and garage and foam insulation sprayed in. I am a little concerned about the sleeve but I know they are common when connecting to some iron pipe with other metals or plastic. Is this a good idea? Better ideas? I have been assured not a code issue.

Thanks all! I was concerned about burying in the wall since it is a wet vent pipe.

  • Back of house before remodel. Master Bedroom is the 3 windows on right, the bedroom that was taken over is the 2 windows near the dish and the master bath window is in the middle (not opaque-apparently a bird hit it pretty hard)
  • Old master bath. Whirlpool tub was on the left as you enter from the Master bedroom. The shower door is on the right
  • Love those white sinks and cabinets with the carpeted floor. 1
  • There is the smashed window and the shower. Actually the view is great when not broken. Out to the lake. 1
  • Old master closet. I hate those wire shelves! 1
  • The master toilet. Good news at least was that it was a separate "room" with a door. 1
  • Finaly getting to it. ON the right, the new Master bedroom windows, on the far left, the bedroom windows are gone and the new closet window is in.
  • This is the 1st floor - you can see we almost gutted the entire floor. We added to the beams supporting the second floor to provide support for the new master bath floor to stop movement. Tile can be heavy
  • The fun of some new home builders. The original plumber cut a big hole in the engineered center beam of the home and destroyed the beam integrity. Good thing we caught it and added the steel for support. 2
  • The Master bath being framed. The Master bedroom is on the left. The old window has been replaced with plywood and new window framed. Because we were putting plumbing in the "outer" wall, we built some extra width to insulate
  • New closet drywalled
  • New tile floor 1
  • Closet door is on the far left. Middle space is for the smaller sink area and the toilet in the room on the right.
  • The pocket door from bedroom to bath is on the right. A normal swing door swinging to the toilet would block the switches, if we swung it the other way it would have formed a "hall" and blocked light. The pocket door was the answer.
  • Finally some completed photos - Pro shots from the tour. The bigger sink, the skylight above, the new window with some added privacy etching but no need for shades. The etching, trees and the lake give privacy and distance 1
  • The new shower as viewed from the new closet.
  • Another pro shot from the smaller of the 2 sinks. 1
  • Same area from the pocket door
  • A little closer and the closet is on the right
  • From the shower. You can see the small sink area now. 1
  • Okay, this got out of order...but the shower and new window in progress.
  • The window up close. The design is hard to see but resembles waves with a symbolic "whale-like" cloud. And you can see the trees provide a lot of privacy too.
  • The pocket door in action
  • The ceiling light. It is a cathedral ceiling and the light picks up the "wave" theme. We had a flat area built at the peak of the roof line to allow the light fixture to hang "flat". Better than tryingg to find a light that could attach on a slope 1
  • Back of the house after the remodel.... what a change! 1
  • There was a slight miscalculation with the location of the sink in the marble and the AXOR fixtures. The stone company not only made it right but they offered a matching marble sink as an upgrade (no the paint can was temporary while expoxy dried).
  • Second sink area with the marble sink and countertops.

Photos from the master bathroom portion of my whole house remodel.

The old bath was "white" cabinetry and outdated 1995 style. We loved the house because of the lake view and its location, so we ended up moving the laundry room from downstairs to the ...»
upper level, expanding the master bath, taking over an adjacent bedroom for a master closet (and to provide a little extra room and comfort in the guest bath). The laundry room is now near the master bath (no photos). Here are some photos of the project. Our home was part of the 1st NARIAtlanta Tour of Homes.

Remodeling: Have been looking for some new ideas for a sculpture (probably in glass) and found some interesting concepts.

I love the bridge. Wish I had left some area for it on the second floor hall when I remodeled and had all the drywall down. Thought I would share. And the chocolate factory from the Bellagio.
