"Senior Fraud" has increased dramatically in this distressed economy and I'm sure we all have our horror stories. The Little Old Lady we bought our place from had been bilked for literally THOUSANDS of dollars since her husband had passed. I think the word gets out when there's a tug on the sucker line and the knocks on the door and the biz cards stuck on my mailbox attest to these instances of consumer abuse or neighborhood phishing. We found several "receipts" from roving "service providers" including one from Bob's Tree & Fence Company ( there was a tree down and a fence was damaged so like Jim Rockford in the TV show, just write or print any name you want to be and you may get something out of somebody before someone notices! ) over $3K to chop up a medium sized tulip poplar and re-string 18 foot of chain-link fence! Buyer beware doesn't even begin to cover it. All the more reason to just ask for a card, copy of a license and a bid before you sign and unless it's a TRUE EMERGENCY, don't let anyone do anything untill you or someone you trust has a chance to check a company/fellow out. In Kevin's Dad's case, I had heard of the company and they had been around quite a while...the project was pretty cut-and-dried and Dadd-i-o didn't just fall off the potatoe truck either!
