About Me:

Single homeowner who dreams of turning her 1.5 story, three bedroom, 2 bath house into one that has more of a beachy feel to it. Grew up in the south and my heart is still there even though I live in the north now. Every room in my house needs improvement, including the basement whcih gets water in it during torrential rain storms. I am learning more and more each day on what I can do with this house..

Favorite area of home improvement:

Spring, summer and fall - anything outdoors, Wintertime is for indoor projects. Actually, there are many days I wish I could just bulldoze this house over and start again (that is once I get my personal keepsakes out of it). Hoping to have a combination flower and fruit/vegetable garden this year big enough for myself, couple of neighbors and take left overs to the local soup kithcen. I am always on the hunt for bargains and sales, no matter if it is for interior or exterior use, as well as unusual and beautiufl designs. I love trying to put what is in my over creeative head into action with a body that is not so cooperative on the creative level.

Gazebos and Ponds - Some Things Just Go Together

What's better than a gazebo? A gazebo with a pond! Nothing adds charm to a landscape quite like a gazebo, and nothing adds natural beauty to a back yard quite like an ecosystem pond. Put ...»

  • Sometimes replacing only some of the surfaces is needed. These stairs have been resurfaced with tiles on a wood structure using a special system.
  • Power washing a deck or porch can completely revive an existing structure.
  • Painting rails and columns might be another way to revitalize a deck or porch.
  • This deck was made to look completely different by using bricks instead of wood. It gives the space a whole new feeling.
  • This cutaway shows how an existing deck or porch can be fitted with stone, tile or brick.
  • Landscaping helps renew an area and blend better into the surrounding yard.

DIY Ideas for Renovating a Deck or Porch

Are you looking to renovate a deck or porch soon to be able to enjoy the summer season? Or maybe you have a new building project in the pipeline. Here are a few of our favorite DIY ideas ...»
for renovating, building, or refurbishing outdoor areas:

1. Power wash the existing deck and railings. You might be surprised at how it looks and you may decide you don't even need to do further renovations!

2. Paint wood or metal floors, railings, and ceilings. Sometimes that crisp new-paint look makes everything okay again.

3. Replace only the part that needs replacing - select rotted boards, remove, and then replace with new before re-staining or painting.

4. If a deck or porch floor has to be totally replaced, think about other options to change the look of your space either with interlocking tiles or an innovative system that allows you to use stone, tile or brick on your deck or porch foundation (shown in the photos below).

5. Lastly, don't forget the power of landscaping for your deck or porch! A little greenery and color goes a long way to creating an outdoor oasis.

  • Pallet board towel holder.
  • Scrap pieces of pallet boards.
  • Glass door knobs
  • I put the boards together in a staggered pattern. Drilled holes for the bolts and then aged the wood even more with a homemade wood stain.
  • Spray painted the bolts and hardware on the door knob to match.
  • I used metal stencils for the towel sign.

Pallet Board Towel Holder

Towel holder made from pieces of pallet boards, glass door knobs, bolts and screws. These pieces of wood were leftover from other projects and I found the old door knobs on ebay. Put them all together to make this shabby towel holder.

  • I hand painted the designs based on some stencils I had. The stencils did NOT work on the rounded sides of the gourds! lol Then I outlined a lot of it with a Sharpie to give it clean lines and make it POP!

  • By painting your built-in the same color as the wall it creates a seamless look
  • How fabulous is this design? Installing a built-in towel holder below the tub? It's a great way for you to store extra towels.
  • Mix and match textures and materials that are in the same color family. You'll make a design statement.

Designing and Styling Your Built in Cabinetry and Shelves.

There are many uses for built-ins. They are ideal as bookshelves, media cabinets, reading alcoves, or just about anything you need to showcase or conceal.
