Sand floor in chicken coup

I have been seeing where people recommend using sand instead of pine shavings in their chicken coups. Can the sand be put on linoleum flooring or does it have to be on dirt? In our coup we built a floor and put linoleum down for easier cleaning. Thank You

IF you're planning on removing the sand from time to time, I could maybe see doing that if you don't have access to something better. You have to be able to change out whatever it is because chicken poop shouldn't be left alone. But sand is so heavy--I don't see any advantage. If you know something I don't, do share.

I strongly recommend that instead of sand, you use diatamaceous earth. This will help reduce or eliminate any mites the chickens might get, as well as fleas, etc. Food grade is what is rubbed on the chicken's body to kill mites.

Hello, we have been using sand in our coop for a year now and we love it. it is so easy to clean its just like a giant litter box. I mix DE in with the sand also I do suggest switching out the sand once a year. We will be doing that soon, I also think the coop smells better than with the shavings. It dries faster than shavings so in the winter it stays a lot dryer in the coop, which is very important in the winter. It is up to you what you use but we love sand!!
