Small Cable Spool to Shelves

I got 4 of these little spools for $20 thru a re-sell app. Probably not the best deal, but really wanted them. My first thought was that she had used them as sitting for her girls. So they sat in my garage for about a month. Then it hit me to use them as small shelves for my new sewing room.
Sawed them in half using my circular saw. Now if I had fancy tools like most of the gals here on HT, then this would have been easier. I couldn't saw thru them with my circular saw, maybe a jigsaw would work better, but I did use a small miter saw to cut in in half since it was durable cardboard.
I always use painter's tape before cutting down any wood. It helps with a smoother edge. Learned that from an HGTV show.
You see what happens when you don't have the right tools. This was the only one I didn't aligned straight. Oh well. I had painted first, as I was going to use them as stools, but chose not to. I saw its character.
The inside of the cable spool has some steal rods in it for support.
Screw in wall & held up thru the tight twine.
I had twine from other projects and I also used a thicker twine, or thin rope from another leftover project. I wrapped the base (this is the back of it) to make it look like thread. And now with the wrapped twine, you can't tell where I cut crooked and not aligned straight.
So out of 2 small cable spools I got 4 small shelves. For this one, I ran out of this type of twine/rope, but I went with it.
For years I have had some little sewing nick knacks as souvenir bought through our military moves, and some from local stores here like Hancocks that closed down. ;-( Many were also gifts.
The little egg people were from a distant family on my husband side when we traveled to Guadalajara -- she makes these. They are so cute I had to buy several from her.
My Seamstress lady egg. She is so cute.
So I am slowly getting my new sewing room together. After my son moved out and on his own, my daughter, who still lives at home, mentioned I should switch my little sewing studio to my son's room and turn the sewing studio into my office. I'm not finished doing either, but they are both functional for now.
This stool I left intact and put casters on the bottom as I use it to put my fan on. I don't always use this room daily, so I don't use the vents much and it's a room that doesn't circulate well. So I use a fan and it works well. I also painted it and I used twine on it. I guess you can use yard of different colors to make it more lively and more fun, but I honestly didn't want to buy anything, and little by little I am only using what I have, unless it's a dire need.

This is an adorable idea! My son just moved out of his room and gave me his blessing to turn it into my sewing room. Would love to put shelves like these on the walls. Would you please tell me where you bought the spools? Thanks so much!

How did you fasten these to the wall? What is the weight of items on the shelves?

Absolutely adorable! My mom has a sewing room, but no longer sews ( she had a stroke a few years ago and has dementia as a result). If she still used that room, I would for certain make these.

I love this! so cute. Great idea to turn into shelves even if it's not for a sewing room.
