How can I hang objects from vinyl siding walls?

I have a vinyl siding home with a large front porch. I would like to decorate it more with planters and other decor using the walls. What is the best way to hang plants and other things without damaging the vinyl?

Unlike regular clapboard siding Vinyl siding "hangs" and is not very structural. Along that same line it allows it to expand and contract a bit with the weather. Putting fasteners through this will affect its ability to move with the weather. It would also compromise the weather "proof" aspect if not done properly. You could hang stuff but would need to ensure that the fasteners penetrate to the structural sheathing behind. If you remove these in the future you will have holes that are not very "repairable"

There are hooks made for hanging light weight items onto vinyl siding, but I'm with Kevin in that I'd not mess with it's integrity.

I have lightweight items hanging on my vinyl siding under cover of my porch roof. I used command hooks and have not had any issues using them. The items have been hanging there for about 5 years and have never fallen.

Great! I was coming to ask the same question. The back of my house is blah and I wanted to hang some mirrors and tin decor. The heavy duty command hooks say they can hold quite a bit of weight but I was unsure of the weather effects. I do not have a covered area back there so do you think it will still work?

Thanks for replies everyone! I do have some lightweight things on using Command hooks, but I guess I'm being to wishful to try and put some "wrought iron" type plant holders against the wall> Just was hoping someone had a creative way around it. ;)

Karen, if you're wanting to add the plants at an elevated level to give some height to your décor why not try either of these ideas? 1. Put hooks in the ceiling and hang your plants from them. 2. Find or build a fern stand and place a plant on it. I have an old fern stand with a fern sitting on top that's been on my porch for 10 years now. It looks great. 3. You could take an old entry door and add braces to the bottom of it so it will stand on it's own. You could them add your wrought iron plant holders to it.

Karen, you could also buy a,tall shepherds hook and put it a heavy pot and weight it with rocks or sandbags. Karen

I tried using a Command hook/outdoor ones, from my vinyl siding and they would not adhere to the siding. Any hints on how to make these hooks adhere to the siding?

They should stick if you clean the areas you plan to adhere the hooks with alcohol first. Be sure the area is dry before placing the hook.

I have the textured cedar looking vinyl siding so I’m not sure if they would stick on mine since my siding is not smooth.

If there is structure that you can use to hang from above, use strong fishing line or thin wire cording . . . you get an invisible look, the object can be flush to the wall, it is easy to adjust and always straight. I have used this method to decorate a meeting room at work without changing the walls. That way, I can hang what I want without upsetting our Facilities Management Division. In my case, we have a suspended ceiling and I can access above for strong attachment points. You might be able to use joists or whatever that are hidden above your soffits.

I bought VZ Hooks & have used them on my vinyl siding for the last 4 years to hang metal signs on our garage & porch. They are wonderful. However, part of our house has older vinyl siding installed in 1986--it doesn't have a "space" to slide the hook under a piece of siding, like the newer vinyl we have :-( I used a Command Hook to hang a metal sculpture & it fell in a week. Perhaps I need a stronger one or to use more than 1 to hang this decoration. Here's a video about VZ Hooks...they are also available on Amazon. I love them!
