Tutorial: Paint-Splattered Wall for an Art-Themed Room
You can create a great-looking artsy wall for the artist in your family with the tips and techniques that I've posted on my website: We Call It Junkin.com. How much paint you let drip off the brush...how you hold the brush...different techniques give you different effects. For example: more paint on the brush gives a stringy effect, less paint on the brush gives a more separated, droplet effect.

Years ago I saw an article that said to put paint in water guns and let the kids have fun. Always planned on doing this with my kids but never got my husbands approval so I don't know how it really works.
