Old kitchen cabinets need an update!

We have very old kitchen cabinets with a seventeen inch opening. I don't think much can be done with that, but the top of the cabinets from the ceiling is about twelve/ fourteen inches. I would like to make a heading to cover that erea because my husband likes to put odds and ends up there. It is like a catch-all for him. I thought about crown moulding, perhaps it would enhance the look of the cabinets. Your thoughts please. Elle
The photo shows a portion of the cabinets. I plan on painting them soon using one of the DIY ideas. Any information will be helpful. Thank you. 😊

Crown molding is an excellent idea. I added crown molding to my twenty year old kitchen for that reason. To my pleasant surprise with the crown molding added, I got two for one. It gave my kitchen a $10,000.00 makeover look. With the right crown molding you can do it too.

I agree! Crown molding will give the cabinets a modern classic look. You can get some cut off samples from the big box stores and see what you like.

Yes agree that crown moulding would give a more finished look on the top of your cabinet doors...but it will not hide all of the things you have tossed up there...all of that needs to be put away out of sight or you will not have the clean uncluttered look that the area needs.

Since you are going to paint anyway, you could add painted lattice instead of a solid cover for the space....even add lights behind it to brighten the whole area. This would "protect" it from clutter, but not weigh down the kitchen.

Yes, Jan is right. Whatever you decide to do,you will have to keep the place uncluttered. While tackling with this problem, keep in mind, by upgrading this area. It now becomes a major focal point of your kitchen. That's a great incentive to keep it clutter free. As specializing in Kitchen Makeovers, depending on your budget, crown molding will give you the most for your bang. Good luck.
