What to create from round wooden cheese wheel box with lid

Marianne Dodd
by Marianne Dodd
This round box is 14.5" dia x 5" high. Wondering how to use it, how to decorate it, paint, paper, fabric? Maybe a small pet bed. What to store in it? Who has done something fun with a box like this?

This would be perfect for decoupage. I would paint the inside of the box and the lid using craft paint. You could decoupage gift wrap on the outside, and then use a picture on the top. I would possibly use braid or ribbon to the bottom 'lip' of the top, as well as around the lid. Another possibility (depending on your own personal style) would be to decoupage using hand-made paper (which you could buy from a craft store). It would give a completely different look to gift wrap. Painting using a marbling technique would also look great. You have endless possibilities, limited mainly by your imagination! I would, however, stay away from shells as I think they might be too heavy as the box looks fairly thin. I have no idea what you could use it for, although keys in an entrance hall is a possible answer. You could also use serviettes to decoupage.

I don't have pictures..but I had three. I painted one a dark hunter green, one burgundy and one off white. I put the words on each one. GONE TO PLAY AND GOLF. I stacked them on the floor and my husband was a big golfer and he stored his golf tee, balls, and gloves and other golf "things in them. WANT TO

I put baby photo of my niece and her future husband on then decorated and gave them it for their wedding envelope holder. Also decorate and use it as a hatbox or store christmas decorations.

I live in senior housing and have had one of these for over 15 years that I refuse to let go...so far, I don't see any ideas that would work for a senior.

I've got some of these that I've been waiting to use. I've seen ideas on Pinterest to turn the lid into a mirror frame with rope or an old leather belt around the outside to hang it from, and turn the box part into shelving- using little cleats on the sides to hold small shelf(ves) in place. You can paint or stain the exterior and paper the inside.

Thanks Chris. I have nothing on our walls yet as we moved recently. It is an interesting idea.

Thanks Judith. My sewing stuff is crammed in to a small cloth bag. This is a great idea.

I left it natural and I store my onions in them .The onions last longer and have no onion smell and I have them right out on the counter or store them inside the cabinet.

Now this is a great idea Right now I have potatoes and an onion in a paper bag on the counter wondering what to do with them.

I had a box like this once ... I stained it in sepia tones to look like a checkers game on the lid. Stenciled, again in darker sepia tones, a few apples around the outside edge of box. Then stained it in light brown to make it look antique. I put the checkers inside the box. I think I sold it ... wish now I hadn't ... LOL

I ran a pole up through the lid inverted to make a bedside tray, then the pole continued up to the larger portion turned down as a drum shade. LED bulbs have no heat so I was able to run them around the inside of the box and down the pole to the foot. Making the foot out of ply board was the only real challenge.

This is nice especially if there is a pattern on the lid of the cheese box. Make it into a clock; the battery/innerds will be on the inside of the box, leaving just the pieces of the clock face for the lid top! It makes a nice shabby chic/farmhouse accent for your kitchen or any other room. If the depth of the box seems like too much, you can take an Exacto knife or razor to reduce the depth to a couple of inches and still be able to fit the lid, with clock face pieces, back on comfortably. My box was only a couple of inches deep, so I didn't have to cut it down at all.

I picked up several of these in N.C. before they realized they could charge for them. Left them natural, then did the Donna DuBury one stroke paint on top and sides. My Mom used hers to put books in and knitting thread.

Do you by any chance go on Pinterest?

I would seal the inside and outside of the box with Geso (Geso is like thick primer does not have to be perfect)Than go to You tube and watch some Videos on decorating cigar boxes until you see what you like - then go to your local craft store and purchase a few supplies . The people on you tube tell you what supplies they are using--and you see step by step how to make what you like.'

That's a great idea, Rhonda. I used to make decorative cigar boxes. I forgot how beautiful and easy they were. On the way...

One more suggestion if you don't mind. They make an adorable wall hanging. Secure ribbon, a piece of leather or rope around the bottom, cut a piece of light weight wood and make a shelf for the inside. Use the shelf for some of your near and dear things and hang it on the wall by the rope, leather or ribbon. etc. You can put the lid on the bottom or keep it separate and use it for another craft idea.

  • I recently saw this and thought it was really cute! https://www.pinterest.com/pin/56787645283252716/

That is similar to my idea with putting a shelf in it. Another fun idea. Thanks for sharing!

Have several to do and am planning a table with a couole. I hope i can describe this properly you have three pieces of wood flat like molding you put a large part of the cheese box or the bottom down at the bottom and the top of the cheese box is the top of your table . You just nail the three pieces of molding to the cheese box. and you have a small table .hope that makes sense. A 3 legged table withe the bottom of the cheese box near the floor and the top for your table top. Both are right side up so use use the bottom for storage and the top as a table. Can be stained painted decorated as you wish.

You can paint or paper it. I stack and use them to store things that don't need to be folded. Think lingerie, socks, bathing suits, etc. Mine are fuschia because that is the accent color in my bedroom.
