Old paint probably equals lead paint. I think you should let a professional do it off your premises. Some things are not worth DIY regardless of the cost.

I agree! You can get a lead testing kit at Ace Hardware, Home Depot, Lowes, and Menards to check for lead. If it is lead based paint, have a professional remove it. If is not lead, use Citrisrip to strip off the paint.

If it is not lead paint, you can heat it with a heat gun and then scrape it off.

Mask off the glass and hardware then sandblast outdoors. wear long sleeves, long pants and a paint respirator. Wipe off dust with a tack cloth or microfiber cloth. If it's old paint just assume it's lead. shake off your blasting clothes and shoes before you go indoors and wash immediately don't contaminate your laundry basket

On such things I used a fluid (more like gel), some kind of paint remover. You simply put it on the wood with brush (gloves, mask etc. - it's not for closed rooms), wait for maybe 15 minutes, and take it off with any kind of sharp knife or skalpel. The rest you can sand carefully, by hand. Good luck :).

Now that's a gorgeous distressed look. People work hours and hours trying to create that type of distressed look. How do you want to finish it and what will you do with it?

thank u for all ur responses! i removed several layers of paint as you see in pic already ..now down to some old resistant paint (lead, i guess) i have door outside now and will use heat gun

Glad to hear you're moving forward :). Using a heat gun can be a really slow job, but it's better then chemicals - depends on the wood itself, it's condition and type. Good luck once again :).

Place the door on a flat surface and apply gel dishwasher soap to the door. Wipe off with a damp cloth the next day. Use gloves.
