Chrissie on Aug 22, 2016Hi letty - completely agree with caryl about handles - can transform for very little outlay - i would definitely paint the cupboards with a satin paint in a very pale pastel (i love green) - co-ordinating new handles and replace grout with white - if you manage to do a makeover dont forget to postHelpful Reply

Skye on Aug 22, 2016Go for a tile paint definitely - maybe a nice clean white or cream. You can save quite a bit just by getting a sample pot rather than getting an entire can mixed up. Scrub the tiles beforehand to prep which should take care of the grout as well. If necessary you can always go over it or even replace it with either a grout in a contrasting colour or something that'll blend. Either way, your local hardware should be able to fix you up. Sample pots of varnish are your friend once again here so again, go over your cupboard frames and then the doors. If you're a colourful sort of personality, I'd put your colour on the doors and leave the frames something clean as a backdrop. No expensive and whacky splashbacks, kickboards, etc, needed. I completely agree with the others - new handles will do wonders for a quick and easy kitchen facelift but if your main issue is with the tiling, it's easily fixed, you don't need to spend a fortune, and who knows - you may find that new handles and such may not even be necessary, especially on a budget. Alternatively, a restoration kit could work just as well - I don't know how much that'll cost you but it may just be a better option for you, money and workwise. I know it's a long read and maybe sounds like a bit of work, but I wouldn't suggest anything I haven't done myself. I hope this helps!1 marked as helpful Reply

CK on Aug 22, 2016OK....if I was asked to come in to do a consult here's what I'd ask: "So, it is the entire look of the kitchen that you dislike, is it the counters and backsplash, or is it the cabinets? If I was on a tight DIY budget, I might actually consider painting the cabinets. That would update the look of the tiles." You might actually be disliking the 'design' the counter and backsplash tiles create in your mind more than the color. Just consider painting the cabinets and let us HT readers know ;-)Helpful Reply

Deanna Nassar on Aug 22, 2016I agree with the others. PAINT! My Mom didn't like her bath so she bought some pink paint and some different rugs and curtains. You'll need a flat finish for first coat and a semi-gloss for second. If you don't have enough in budget for the knobs right now then paint them too. Not sure but nail polish might work on them, just the white part to something different than what you use for cabinets. You don't have to do it all at once. Maybe just the counter and back-splash first. You may like that enough to skip the cabinets for a while. Not sure of color yet? Try laying a sheet or towels over the area.1 marked as helpful Reply

Johnchip on Aug 22, 2016I am surprised so many thought the same as i did. It s not the tile but the cabinets. I might consider going them a satin or pewter black. Try taping up a few pieces of construction paper ($1 pack has 25 colors) first to what you like.1 marked as helpful Reply
