China Hutch outdated??

I have a china hutch that I bought 25 years ago. I have noticed in many decor pictures that the dining space has a buffet and the table/chairs and a few accessories. I have thought of removing the top portion and keeping the buffet with a large picture over it. Is the china hutch old-fashioned? Thank you

My plans for my mom's china cabinet/buffet is to someday paint it and make it my tv stand. Don't know what I will do with the top, however.

Best thing I have seen done to repurpose a hutch? The bottom set up as a credenza... and the top above it mounted on the wall as storage shelves! Looks amazing and is very clever. Don't get rid of the top. Find something to do with it! :-)

They really aren't old fashion. Just that many homes lack a dining room and nowhere else to place them. You are correct that many homes with dining rooms use a buffet, which probably were part of china hutch. It's a personal choice. Another thing to consider is that a piece that tall can fall and hurt someone, especially children. Many people and DIY are converting the buffets into TV cabinets. Hutches have been converted into headboards, mounted on walls as curios, etc.

I turned the top of one upside down so the opening above the hutch became an open shelf and the two doors were under it. I use it in my small foyer as a storage cabinet. It was just narrow enough to fit without getting in the way of the door.

Depends what the design is. I've had a two piece china closet for over 40 years -- Broyhill, modern. I painted it in more up to date colors and I wouldn't trade it for anything. (Painted navy blue inside, white outside, clear glass shelves left alone; base has little navy doors.)

Could you add a picture of the hutch & description of your home style/colors? There are so many options! Do you want it to stay natural wood? Are you opposed to painting it?

Hi Carri I may see about posting a picture. My husband is not so sure about getting rid of the top part. I am more into keeping things up to date. Yes I have thought of painting it but the rest of my furniture has a dark wood finish If it were a completely different color It may look out of place My style is more transitional

Some of the older hutches are made of good hardwood and I would not paint it. However, It can be redone to make it more modern. I would look on the Internet at different ones for sale and pay close attention to the details that you might change on yours. Or, someone may want to buy yours then you could replace it. Hubby is in the process of building mine in Amish style. I have a lot of dishes and odds and ends I want to keep on it and in it. I am sure someone would want it. Maybe you just need a change. I get tired of things after a few years and need to redo. : )

Here are some pictures I gathered for you that show how nicely you can maintain the wood of your hutch, while still updating it with paint :-) I included several styles of hutches & different color/wood combinations to give you some ideas
