For scrubbing what type of things. for basic kitchen stuff I have found the Bulk packs (at costco) of the yellow sponge with the green scotchbrite pad to be the best deal.

Thank you for the suggestions but this doesn't answer my question because I am wanting to crochet or knit my own.. They are used as a scratcher doing dishes

  @ I remember my Mom making something like this, and I think she was using a nylon net type of thread. Sorry Joyce, it's been a very long time and my memory isn't quite what it use to be, but I can remember her using the crochet hook to weave the stuff together. Looked really weird.

I would think a "Pot holder" type square shape would get the job done. I am wondering though about it being abrasive enough to clean stubborn things....then there is the whole drying out between uses thing. The green backed sponges dry fairly quick and do not turn into germ farms.

  @Kevin, you just put them in the dishwasher to clean them. If they are crocheted loose enough they'll come as clean as a 3M green scrubber sponge.

I use the net bags from lemons or onions. They work great and dry almost instantly.

There are patterns out there if you just Google "crochet scrubbies with netting.
