Ceiling leak and repair

Recently I had a ceiling leak (roofing problem) in my kitchen which has left an unsightly spot and small hole in my kitchen. Is there anything I can do to repair this on my own or should I call for professional help?

If you have a hole...that indicates that the damage was a bit more than just some minor "discoloration". As is often the case the damage area may or may not be directly below the leak, as I have seen water run along the back of the drywall up to 10 feet away. Repairing drywall is not rocket science, but it does involve a bit of skill and experience to look good or match texture wise. It you have never done this before I would bring in someone who has.

If it is a small hole, less than1/2", I'd fill it with drywall putty. You may have to do it in stages and depending on your ceiling texture, the last bit you can either try to match or smooth it. No one will notice the spot - you might, but no one else will! Large holes need to be cut out with a drywall saw in a square, cut a new piece of drywall the same size (I make mine slightly larger to hold it in place) then tape and putty around it. Very simple really! To paint, use Kilz (comes in a spray) and then paint over with your ceiling color.
