Neighbor has this growing in her yard and it is overtaking her plants and all. She says it is extremely intrusive and will kill the plants. Is it easy to kill if needed?

  @Connie Cunningham Shame is it really does look nice, but if it is intrusive and hard to control and if it does in-fact kill other plants, I suspect I have to try and kill it. (My neighbor wants to kill it and I suggested they get ROUNDUP and spray the leaves, or find the Vines in the ground and if not too many (where they are rooting from)< CUT and pull the vines.)

  @Jim G Invasive is an understatement. LOL From my experience not too far from your neck of the woods, pulling it out is the best way to get rid of it. It does not take a whole lot of effort to pull the vines off. Many vines do not respond the first time to weedkiller and you will have to keep spraying and spraying. It is best to pull it out. I once pulled out 3 pick up truck loads of ivy and after a couple years it was almost gone. Good luck.

I think I spent half the time in my New York garden pulling up Virginia creeper. And now it has followed me to Florida, but seems much less prolific here.

Also called Japanese Holly. Down here in Florida is is VERY invasive and very hard to get rid of. You can pull it down but it keeps coming back - no way to get rid of it completely. It's in a neighbors yard and they don't control it so it keeps coming into my yard. I hate it.

So question all: Will it kill all other plants? Behind my NEIGHBORS yard and all her trees and bushes behind her fence BUTT up to her fence..... for me, I have my fence 5 feet in from my property line (always do that) and have KILLED all brush in that 5 feet so the brush and trees behind MY YARD which then is in Community property won't touch my fence or plants....... It looks nice to me and if it overtakes all the brush behind my fence (remember, 5 feet back!), then for ME it looks nice, and I'm hoping NO HARM. ????

  @Jim G Virginia creeper may leap more than creep, but there is very little chance it will kill anything. The biggest issue may be the moisture it takes up.

  @Jim G I have seen it choke out smaller bushes and shrub as well as flowers or smaller vegetation. As I tell people "it does not play well with others". Douglas is right about moisture but once the Creeper or any other vine wraps itself around a plant then the plant is just a host and no longer an asset to your landscape. There are other more beautiful and even flowering vines/shrubs/plants that you could plant along your fence or property that would be far more attractive.

  @The Garden Frog with C Renee ok, so its a matter of wanting to go back into the "Community Area" (approx 10' of a wooded area to the front of a water easement) and start cutting it down from the ground, then trying o keep up with it. MIGHT be worth doing one cool morning. It won't reach my fence as I have 5 feet of NOTHING but dirty behind my fence and the area (I killed all the weeds and brush with Roundup)

  @Jim G Pulling it out is really easy. Ivy is the worst here in common areas because people just throw it in there and it eventually strangles the trees and any native plants. Once you get it pulled it is not hard to keep in check and eventually the creeper will go away. But i would wear long sleeves and jeans to make sure no poison ivy or oak is mixed in. Always a precaution for me because poison ivy loves to mix with creeper here.

Looks like what we have. it is hanging from an oak tree waiting to hang onto something. it has choked back smaller plants and bushes. we just keep pulling it out or cutting back. We are in FL also.

  @Sandra R It will take time and after 3 years I have only 1 spot where ivy tries to grow and this year it is not coming back! so there is hope. Keep cutting it at the base of the tree going up and then just pull it down and digging up the roots. If you cut at the base most of it will eventually die. Good luck.

  @The Garden Frog with C Renee wonder... cut near the ground and leave some leaves. then spray with Roundup! Roundup on the leaves is supposed to transport it to the roots and kill the roots.

  @Jim G Yes that would work. but pull it off the trees and other plants first and spray at the ground for better results so that the overspray does not harm any other plants. you will find pulling is a stress release too if you are in a bad mood. LOL

  @The Garden Frog with C Renee I'm generally ONLY in a bad mood after my wife wakes up! Actually, I try to have the attitude that I am happy just to wake up and after that, anything that happens in the day is easy to deal with! Waking up is my only concern!

If virginia creeper is anything like grapevine, yes it will kill trees, plants bushes...it just takes over and is hard to get rid of.

I had virginia creeper on one corner of my house a long time ago & as long as I managed to keep it under control it was a pretty plant with beautiful fall color.

if you follow it back to where it is coming up, why cant you cut it at the roots then either pull it up or dig it up no matter what it is....

  @Anne Jorgensen if I understand your question, the answer would be that most vines~Va creeper, ivy, and other ground covers can root by stems touching the ground. if you cut it off and leave it the vine could continue to grow. Ivy does this and I have had VA creeper do the same. I have spray VA creeper without pulling it up to have it come right back. Dig or pull up the roots is important or spraying what is left at the base. but propagation for these invasive vines happens by runners and shoots from the vine itself.
