How do I paint a mosaic backsplash white?

Question

The backsplash is very dark and trying to go for beachy look.  Want to paint it white since taking it down is very costly.  Some tiles are stainless steel.  What will cover to lighten the area?

I would take a heavy grit sandpaper and sander on it a until all surfaces had tooth. Then a couple coats of poly or enamel paint.

If you are going for a beach theme, have you thought of painting it in a pale blue or aqua (or even pale green) rather than stark white.   I would leave the stainless steel ones as they are.   Just a thought ...

Or you could consider putting lighter mosaic or just tiles over what is there. We're done it many times and it has worked well.

Your going to have to go to Home Depot or other home store and buy a product that seals brick and mortar.  Sort of like what Bull's Eye or Kilz does for wood.  Than you'll have a clean surface that won't bleed thru and you can paint whatever color you like.

If you use tile adhesive there's a lot of leeway to make it thick or thinner, thereby evening out uneven surfaces. I don't know about stick-ons--have never used them. We've always used regular tile in whatever size, shape, tile adhesive (or liquid nails which works almost better on horizontal surfaces) and then grout--just like tiling floors.
