Need an effective way to "antique" this three legged jewelry box

Found this old box at a garage sale and thought this should be a quick little project. Not the color turned out really bright and I tea stained the graphic images and distressed the edges with sandpaper but I want to dull the bright color. I tried putting stain on and then wiping it off but it barely worked as you can see. Did I do it wrong? Is there a better way to tone it down and make it look aged? Any ideas?

Have you tried putting white or lite pink paint over the bright color? I did this with a bathroom door (barn red) let paint set for a few seconds then use sponge to wipe off excess. It lightened the color and gave it an old look

@ : if you have acrylic paint, use a brown like burnt umber, thinned with a little water and brush it on. There is also a crackle medium that you could apply with paint that would REALLY give it a "weathered" appearance.

that is a good idea. I have a bunch of shades of pinks. I can try it on the bottom and see how it works.

@ : Sorry - been too busy to get on hometalk! Any acrylic paint company -Delta, Folk Art or Americana- they all have a crackle medium. There are different directions for each. Delta also has a "gel stain medium" that turns any ac. paint into a stain. Works great!

@Marie: Yes, start out with a little bit, @ , you can always add additional coats at a later time.
