Where to find interior decorating advice?

I need help with deciding on a flooring to go with new painting. This is for a 1150 sq ft house. I'd like some face-to-face time with a decorator so that she can see the samples. I've never used one for a short consult like this before. Where should I look for one? How much should I pay? Thanks, y'all.

  • My best inspiration comes from touring model homes to see the materials in person. Interior decorators can be expensive and since you are choosing flooring I would go see the floor in person and model homes, home stores, decorator stores, and even open houses in your area that say "updated, new floors, etc" I can give you some rules of advice about flooring- darker shows more dust! I put in a beautiful dark Pergo flooring in my master bath that shows dust. Too light of a floor can draw attention to the room. If you are ever going to sell the home, think a medium to lighter oak- not too light and not dark. I put in TrafficMaster from The Home Depot and it looks fabulous. The realtors who came and toured my house liked this floor and it has both dark, med, and light tones. It looks a bit modern and helps not to show too much dog hair!

The closing is a week from Friday and I'm on a walker so I can't go a zillion places to look at decor. I have a dependency to make everything matchy matchy and balanced (1 on this side & 1 on that side). Which doesn't make for a fantastic design. And trying do this online won't work. In your picture, is the wall beige, gray, silver, taupe, off-white? See the problem? So I thought a quick face-to- face consult would be best.

I agree with The Garden Frog! An interior decorator is going to take your colors, concepts, ideas, lifestyle and give you choices. Why pay for that.

Garden Frog, spot on dark floors show dust, water spot, never look clean! What color grey is that in photo, and brand? Will be painting soon, like the timeless grey colors. Thx in advance!

Dark paint - "Silver Charm" Olympic Light paint - "Spring Thaw" Olympic They are the closest true gray I've been able to find that don't have brown, green, or raspberry cast to them. Top laminate - "Delaware Bay Driftwood" Dream Home at Lumber Liquidators Bottom laminate - "Brazilian Ebony" Dream Home at Lumber Liquidators I took 4 photos and none of them do the real colors justice. Here is the photo of the driftwood floor. See the dark gray and light gray on the walls and just a couple of spots of light wood? That's what drew me to it. What are your thoughts?

I Googled "gray laminate floor" and hit the mother lode. Tons of examples with gray walls and white trim. Yahoo.

Thanks, for paint colors. As for flooring, get what you like, but will you still like it in 5 years? I really like grey flooring but think will eventually will get tired of it. Try to keep that in mind when choosing. Hope that helps!

"...will get tired of it" that's what most of this DIY forum is about. We get tired of stuff and want to paint it, change the legs, add something, remove something. Just look at all of the kitchen cabinets that are being painted. They're perfectly good cabinets but we are tired of them. Companies list Rust-oleum are doing cartwheels. ;-D And, if I go with the gray floor and grow tired of it, I can come here and first find tips about rugs, then painting it, then replacing it. Sounds like a good idea to me.

I know that you asked about face-to-face advice, but thought the links may be a starting point. A few years back (pre-Internet DIY), I was looking through a real estate booklet (the type you see for free in restaurants and stores). I came across a designer who would give in-home consultations, and then you could go from there. She arrived looked around and told us for $100, she would suggest colours, furniture placement, and style tips. She spent an hour at our house looked around to see what type of style we liked, showed us pictures and asked to choose our favourites, and asked us what we wanted to keep and get rid of. She got back to us with paint chips, and furniture placement ideas. She also included names of trades and businesses for our needs. Those trades gave us a 10% or + discount ( a deal she had with them). We followed and/or adapted some of what she said. In some cases, the trades offered cheaper, and/or better alternatives based on our needs, codes etc. Overall though we felt we got our $ worth. Friends of ours had a design service come in 3x, one from a local paint dealer, one from HD (?), and one from a furniture dealer. They charge a nominal fee, and you are refunded all or part of it if you buy their product. I'm not 100% sure, but I thought I saw something being offered through Costco as well. Good luck!
