I bought a unfinished kitchen table and I want to stain it. I can't figure out the direction of the grain. I have watched videos but still can't figure it out. Help. what if i mess up by going in the wrong direction, will it look funny?

    Stain with the grain.

You must stain with the way the grain goes , that way you can still see the grain as it goes into the grain, I've always did it that way and it looks really good,

Yes stain with the grain. Judging from your photo, the grain appears to run from just left of the pedestal toward the cabinet on the far right near the door. If you can post another photo that would be helpful.

The grain will look like lines, go with the lines

Wet it bit if your having a hard time seeing it. I can tell from the pic it runs towards the door.

Take a damp cloth...not WET, but damp. Wipe top of table and the wood grain should come out. Let dry, then stain.

When you dampen the table to see the grain, do the entire table then use an iron to smooth out the grain (remembering which way the grain is going.) then stain. You will come out with a much smoother finish.

Oh also, I actually have an old iron that I bought second hand that I use for just that purpose! That way I don't take a chance on damaging my good iron.

You can ruin it. but you won't. Pretend it is notebook paper with lines on it. Wood grain is the same thing different concept. Your wood grain has lines that go in the same direction, follow that direction when you sand it & stain it
