It would help to know where on the door it is. Do have a photo of the whole door you could share too please?
  • But being located so close to the door jamb I would think its some sort of a latch. Can you take a few photos of the door a bit further away and on the other side to get a better idea of how its mounted and where its located? Does it swing back and fourth, does it have pressure to push the round ball towards the white trim? What kind of door is it? Old cabinet or entrance style type?

@Jane Waldmann Is it possible that it is some type of doorbell or door stop?

It is probably some kind of latch but it puts me in mind of a ballcock in a toilet cistern!

This is a rubber ball that swings to keep the screen door from slamming. When my brother and I were kids we raced in and out of the house constantly. These were on every screen door to help our mother maintain sanity.

@Josephine Yep and I wish I could find some of these now. They are very hard to come by. If you see any in Grass Valley, plz let me know. I'm not far from there.
