What's happening to my tomatoes?

Louise

This is the second of my tomatoes to ripen, if you can call this ripening. The first looked the same. Why is this happening? They don't get the amount of sun they need but my tiny tomatoes (grape ones, maybe?) ripen beautifully. Sorry for the blurry photo.

You are not watering them enough!

Hot, rainy weather causes fruit crack. After a long dry spell, tomatoes are thirsty. Plants may take up water rapidly after the first heavy rainfall, which swells the fruit and causes it to crack.

    Inconsistent watering .

to help avoid fruit crack - Water regularly and deeply. If you get a period of heavy rain, then you should reduce supplemental water. If you go on vacation, don’t soak them before you leave and let them go dry until you return, and soak them again. Use a sprinkler (drip preferably) on a timer, or hire the neighbor kid and give him a five minute training course on how to water consistently.

Although this doesn't help your problem per se, when I saw the thumbnail for this pic, I honestly thought it was done on purpose. It looks like a flower! I think you should grab a small mat, and move it around until you like a part of the tomato pic that you like, and frame it!

Mine are similar to this one. I also have heirlooms that are very slow to turn from green to red. Anyone know why?

Seems like weather has a lot to do with it. Ours look like this when we have hot, humid and scattered stormy weather. Just as they become ripe.

Improper watering, humidity, not enough sun all play roles for your tomatoes. Deep watering into the root system first thing in the morning. Never sprays the leaves as that will create a fungus. Check the foliage for any sign s of fungus or insects which will also damage the fruit.

I suspect you have a problem on micro-nutrient deficiency, this is manifested by cracking of fruits. Consult your Agricultural Agent in your area for best advice.

My daughter is an eviromental scientit and she had the same problem. She has said that this summer was way to hot for my farm produce. We live in z Delaware and the local farms have experienced so many problems due to the excessive heat this year on the East Coadt.

This happens a lot when there is high heat and insufficient rain. Ours are much the same way this year with our larger tomatoes. My romas and cherries and tomatillos are ok but my beefsteak look a lot like yours. I tease my other half a lot about only bringing me bad looking tomatoes LOL. We water daily but it is not the same as having regular rains. Realistically we are in a drought most of July and August up until the last week or so. Even my green peppers are not as juicy as they normally are and the seeds are loose inside rather than a bunch attached to the main stem.
