Gardening: Plant Identification please?

Barbara Sawyer
by Barbara Sawyer
I bought this plant at my Lake County Extension Office here in Central Florida. It was labeled a "Purple Conflower", but is definitely not that. I planted it as a small plant and it has grown over 5 feet tall. Any ideas? It has tassel-like tips.

I meant to say it was labeled a "Purple Coneflower".

I have one in Indiana don't know what it is they get big and pretty and starts will come up everywhere I got my start from a neighbor and I love them, they also attract Bees not the stingy kind.

I don't recognize that plant, but I'd be very inclined to show your photo to your extension office, which definitely sold you a bill of goods!

@Claudia Right, I have seen many weeds (wild flowers) that I love. Thanks for your input. I wish I would have known what it was before I planted it though, it's not in a good place for a six foot plant.

If you could bring a piece of the plant to the Plant Clinic, Mon. to Fri 9 to 4, we will try to correct our mistake. I can't tell from the picture what it is but it is surely not a purple coneflower. Sorry for the misrepresentation on the plant.

don't know what it is, but a weed in Indiana. I pull them out of my flower gardens!

    weeds in my garden!

I'm not certain what the name of it is but I wish I could get rid of it. My home's previous owners had planted this right next to the walkway. Needless to say you were dodging the things to get to the front door so we removed them or at least we tried!
  • Glenna Kennedy Glenna Kennedy on Aug 28, 2013
not sure what the correct name for it is..I call it a weed and pull it out every time I see it.
  • Judy Judy on Aug 28, 2013
This is exactly why I prefer to buy my plants from a nursery. Last year I stopped at a Master Gardener's plant sale & bought a Roma tomato which turned out to be...well....some kind of small tomato with poor flavor.....not a Roma for sure.

I agree not all tags are accurate at Nurserys, two years in a row I bought red lupines from two different Nurserys and both ended out being pink

I am a Master Gardener in VA and we have fabulous plant sales so I take a bit of offense to that comment. If you have ever been to a MG plant sale you will find kids typically running wild while parents look at plants. We catch them pulling tags from plants and rearranging them in the pots. Our plant prices are about half the price of nurseries and we grow them ourselves. When you buy from MGs, you are helping your community. Sorry to orate so long but I feel strongly about this. Please don't generalize all MGs into that one bad experience.

@Kathy C Yes I agree with you and I don't blame the MG Program, it is true things get mixed up and sometimes it is the customers which accidently change the tags. The MG Program is wonderful and provide such a great service to the community, I have always supported them!

Never seen what you call a 'master gardener' here in Canada..not to say they dont exist. What I have seen is plants bought from nurseries and garden centers that have weeds growing in with the plant that you buy and if you dont see it you could very well plant it thinking its another plant. Im still pretty sur the above is a weed..then again some weeds are very pretty when they flower all depends on your definition of beauty I guess.
    • Leona G Leona G on Aug 29, 2013
@Glenna Kennedy The MG program is usually in a Land Grant University. I don't know if Canada has Extension Offices or not but that would be the place to look.
  • Judy Judy on Aug 29, 2013
@Leona G I wasn't trying to put down Master Gardener's. I think they're a great group of folks who try their very best to help other gardeners. It's just where I happened to buy that tomato plant. Wouldn't have made a lick of difference if I'd planted a whole bunch of tomatoes but I only do 4 or 5 plants total, at least one is a cherry & that was my only Roma that year. I particularly wanted Romas for drying so was very disappointed. I usually get my plants from our local Co-op & have never been disappointed.
    • Leona G Leona G on Aug 29, 2013
@Judy Thank you and again I am sorry that the plant you purchased was not the plant that you wanted. Wishing you better luck in the future
  • Judy Judy on Aug 29, 2013
My sincere apologies to any & all Master Gardeners. I never meant to criticize Master Gardeners...it just happened to be where I bought that particular tomato plant. I'm sure there are many possible reasons why/how it happened to be mislabeled.

Thanks to everyone for your help. Golden Rod has been Identified!
    • Carole Carole on Jul 31, 2020

I have been trying to identify the same plant Barbara. I sowed a packet of wildflower seeds in the spring. No sign of it blooming yet.... it just keeps growing! From Carole in Vancouver, B. C.

eXtension is a world wide program, and Master Gardeners are a "closer to home" smaller part of it. Not every county or whatever they call smaller governmental bodies in Canada has a group. Check the internet. Ill see what I can find for you. I have had really neat weeds and valuable plants pop out of a pot I bought with some thing else also in it. Goldenrod can be expensive to buy if you got a good cultivar. Ragweed is what causes allergies, so no, that I would pull. Otherwise the Goldenrod will give you a beautiful fall show of color.

Did you ever see it bloom yellow?
    • Barbara Sawyer Barbara Sawyer on Aug 31, 2013
@Judy Grecco I haven't seen this particular plant (Golden Rod) bloom yet, it's getting ready to soon. I have seen Golden Rod in the wild bloom and it is pretty.

It looks like it will be tall and beautiful. Could you post a picture when it does? Despite our best efforts, every year we meticulously carry identification of seeds through the process of germination, to transplanting and into styrofoam cups. Every year we end up giving away plants because the tag mysteriously vanished or got knocked out of a cup and we can't figure otu which one. I got a Queen of the Prairie for $1 from Lowes because it had no label and was on the Dollar sale cart. That plant was almost extirpated from Pennsylvania till it hit my garden where it grew and grew! I have sent starts from it to quite a few big garden sales so what your plant develops into may be a real find!
