My lily's are blooming everywhere in partial shade but the garden books say that they should bloom in spring and have green foliage after the bloom. Why are mine blooming in August after the foliage dies back?

  • Naked ladies bloom now. The foliage comes up in spring and dies back down. They are fine. do not worry!
  • They are gorgeous, I guess it makes sense that they are called Naked Ladies after all.

Yours are doing exactly what they should do.

We have pink Naked Ladies. Green foliage grows in the spring, after it dies out the flowers pop up. They are already done for the year. I love them. They came with the house when we bought it 13 years ago. I do nothing to them and they come back every year!

I miss mine! The few bulbs I dug up didn't come back at my new place. They behave like the amaryllis, leaves and flowers come out at different times.

I don't think amaryllis like to be moved either. Mine haven't bloomed since I transplanted them.

I've heard them called (Bare) Naked Ladies, Surprise Lilies & Resurrection Lilies...different names, same plant. This variety of lily blooms in the fall after all its green foliage has died back. As Douglas Hunt said, they're doing exactly what they're supposed to do. Enjoy them.

I have them also, they are called Nerine bowdenii. They are the hardiest Amaryllidaceae. I go south for the winter and they are in bloom just before I leave, so I always take flowers to the cemetery for my mothers grave. The deer don't seem to eat them like they do when I take roses!

There is another type of naked ladies that does bloom in the fall, usually reddish and it does send up green leaves as the blooms start to fade. These leaves will die back in the spring after other flowers have come up. Does give you some green in the beds during the winter. Not as pretty a flower as the ones shown here. It took about 3 years for mine to bloom after moving some. Just enjoy them,

lol If I had something blooming, I wouldn't be worried about it. It's when they don't bloom you get worried.

I have found out the hard way that the spring and summer weather extremes that we all seem to be experiencing really does have an impact on my flowwering perennials. Lately we have had 4 straight summers of triple digit temperature and little rain. Last year our state literally flooded. I have found that most of my flowering plants started blooming in the fall when they were cooked all summer. I thought his odd...I was purchasing fall produce from a guy in October and he was commenting on my Angel Trumpets and Amaryllis that were blooming like crazy. Now this year, with a mild winter and more rain back in October that ever in history, all my plant began blooming in late February. And my okra are up.

The ones that have green foliage in the spring that dies back and then a flower emerges in late summer are called a surprise lily Naked ladies have big green foliage that stays green until frost that have flowers emerge throughout the summer, cut stalk off and a new one will pop up

The fall blooming lilies do well in dappled shade in the southeast. They can bloom in yellow, red and even dark blue. Several asian distributors on ebay selling various colors and are reasonably price. I will plant them this fall and wait in anticipation of fall.
