My Mom wanted a lighted Christmas picture. One day while I was at my local ReStore I came across some cheap strands of white mini lights . There are always old kitchen cabinets, doors, drawers...So I picked up a cabinet door for around 3 dollars. The lights were about the same cost or less.
I cleaned all the grime off the kitchen cabinet door with mild soap and water. Then I had my husband sand it so the paint had a nice surface to stick to.

This is the finished project with the lights on. I showed my husband where I wanted the lights to "poke through". He marked the spots and then drilled holes. We have blue painters tape on the back to hold wires against the board.
Here is another view with the lights off

I put a thin layer of Gesso on the door before I started applying my design and paint. Gesso is a liquid medium that is commonly placed on canvas to give the surface some 'tooth'. That just gives the paints a better ability to grab on to the surface it is applied to. I used paints in various shades of gray.
Suggested materials:
  • I think the whole project cost 6 dollars or less.
  • I used acrylic paint that I already had. I sealed it with a gloss varnish and then a polycrylic.
  • It is sturdy and heavy. It can safely be placed out on her front porch, we dont get snow in Sacrame
