A Fall Into Winter Window Box.

I have several window boxes at my house. It can be a little pricey to fill them up each season, so I've learned to use dried flowers from my perennial gardens in the fall to fill in around one or two seasonal annuals like ornamental kale or mums.
This window box is one of my favorites. I found a galvanized boiler with a rusted out bottom at a garage sale and my handyman neighbor Ken helped me add a slatted bottom (to allow water to drain) and mount it under the window. During summer it's filled with blooming annuals, but one they start going downhill in the fall I pull them out and add various dried flowers from my garden.
I've used hydrangea, sedum, astilbe, lavender, foam flower and burning bush in this arrangement.
I don't do anything special to 'preserve' the flowers, I just cut them from the plant and tuck them into the planter. They don't retain their color all winter, but they look good for a couple of months. Here in Minnesota they will likely be covered in snow by December anyway!
I have a much larger window box on the front of my house that I treat in a similar manner. To read more about it, be sure to check out my blog post linked below.
