Can you share photos please? What type of finish is on them now?

@Z I'm new to hometalk- keep adding photos and they disappear! The finish might be varnish- it's 50+ years old and has turned very red-orange. I want to appreciate the wood and workmanship without the color!

50 years ago, shellac was a common finish on pine paneling, kitchen cabinets and other wooden furniture. It comes in a variety of colors from clear to yellow to orange to red. Made from the secretions of the lac beetle, Pick a inconspicuous spot and rub it with denatured alcohol. If it is shellac, it will start to liquefy and dissolve . To remove the shellac follow these tips http://www.wikihow.com/Remove-Shellac To learn more about shellac, google it. Wikipedia has a good article on it.

Took me a long time to check back- seems like the advice would have been just what we needed. Unfortunately we no longer have the house with that woodwork.
