I've done A LOT of DIY projects. This one was the largest one I've tackled all by myself and I can't tell you how in love I am with my kitchen.
I say this about every project, but, I seriously LOVE my kitchen! My Husband and I bought his childhood home 3 years ago. I've worked hard to transform the house into our home.
It was hard in the beginning because he didn't want to see change, but, I can tell you the home is ours. It doesn't remind me of his Mom anymore and the lack of attention she gave the house (EDITED: This COMMENT wasn't meant to be NEGATIVE. I've known this home for 15 years. For ANYONE to take a snap at me and email me with personal threats is as rude as the comment seemed to have came off to some people. As my MOTHER IN LAWS primary care giver, I've been through it all with this woman. For anyone who has been in this home, knows the poor condition the home was in. It was hard for me to wrap my head around not seeing the home as my Mother In Laws, where things were placed, the home being cluttered {from dementia} and now see it as our home and how I can make the changes to update the home and make it MY families home. The transition has been difficult for EVERYONE involved and will continue to be. So the harsh comments coming from complete strangers is hurtful and has continued to make me upset (and cry) all weekend long. THINK before you JUDGE.)
I knew I wanted to paint the cabinets from day one. I was scared. I didn't know what color. I didn't know exactly what I was doing.
So as any good Mom would do, I googled. However, I couldn't really find much in the way of how to paint cabinets like a professional. I knew I didn't want latex, nor did I want to tackle chalk paint. I wanted these cabinets to last, not chip (my OCD can't handle that!) and knew I needed to go light with the color because we don't get a whole lot of natural light with having woods in our back yard.
So I headed to Sherwin Williams and did a little research while grabbing some paint samples. I knew I wanted something oil based and didn't think you could purchase oil based paints in Ohio. However, my new friends at Sherwin Williams told me in fact you can, in quarts!
I grabbed primer and 4 quarts of oil based paint and went to town. I first removed the cabinets from the hinges. I then took all the doors and cabinets down to my make shift work station in the garage.
I then cleaned, sanded, sanded, cleaned, sanded and cleaned some more. Then I went to town with two coats of primer and three coats of paint over the course of 5 days. I wanted to be sure that the paint had a chance to cure and harden. I've had the cabinets painted for 4 months now and not ONE single chip. With the kids spilling stuff constantly they do wipe up like a dream!

I recently changed my kitchen and bathrooms after living in my house for 8 years. It was built in 1999 and the only updates it's had were prior to us moving in when we had the whole house repainted inside, New toilets, New flooring and New faucets. I had all the cabinets in the kitchen and bathrooms painted white. They were oak. They are spray painted with a good quality paint so you can still see the wood grain. Even the insides were painted. Then I put granite countertops throughout as well as new sinks and faucets. What an amazing transformation and now I have a beautiful kitchen and bathrooms. And so much brighter! Love it!!💝
