Judy on Aug 30, 2013I have seen many types of platform beds. One of the best ideas I came across was using the short cabinets (the kind used above stoves and refrigerators) as a base. These lined the sides, and the mattress base was plywood. This gives additional storage, which is sometimes lost in platform beds. An old, plain headboard was screwed to the base. The cabinets were recycled from someone's trash and painted to match the room. Not fantastic at explaining...does this make sense?Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Aug 30, 2013This can go from low and simple...to a bit higher with drawers for storage etc. I have also just built some simple 2 x frames that allow for storage containers to be used below. IMHO the biggest space waster in a home is a "box spring". I slept for 20 + years on a simple futon mattress, and now sleep just on a mattress without a box spring.Helpful Reply

Therese C on Aug 31, 2013Mine was built in this manner (as shown in the photo). But instead of stapling or nailing the slats to the beds framing, I made my slats Swedish Style. I tried to show in my example how I hooked the slats all together. It is a fairly simple project, but be sure to have plenty of support in the middle!Helpful Reply

Bonnie Lewenza on Aug 31, 2013I would not suggest using cupboards as a frame unless you reinforce it some how. Most cupboards are made of particle board unless you can find real old ones that are made of real wood.Helpful Reply

Sheryll S on Aug 31, 2013I recommend going to Ana White for plans and tutorial. She is really, really good and I am sure she has plans already posted for at least one platform bed and she works with lot's of folks to help them. http://ana-white.com/Helpful Reply

Mary Anne Gucker on Aug 31, 2013I'm working on an idea to use pallets. I have a king size bed and am thinking of using two "couch" sized pallets stacked on each side length-wise then covering them with 3/4" plywood. Sorry - I don't have measurements yet - it's still in my head. May need some square pallets to fill in too.Helpful Reply

Phil Miller on Aug 31, 2013Buy a Hollow wood bed frame for about $25 at Sam's or Costco. Build a headboard out of either the back to an old bench or cover a piece of plywood with fabric. I saw one on Pinterest that had a Chevy truck tail gate as a headboard. You can store long tables under these beds or you can build boxes to go under the beds for storage. A good place to put your card table is under the bed.Helpful Reply
