Issues with staining a deck

Michelle
by Michelle
Well I finally stain the new deck. I waited two months from when it was built. The sides and stairs came out nice but part of it is spolchty, if that is even a word. Did I ruin the deck, will a second coat cover the mess? Thanks

Was it double kiln dried wood? What product did you use? Usually if it is wood from say Lowes or Home Depot it needs to season for 8-12 months to dry out. :-)

Local company built deck from their own stock ,wood did not come home depot or lowes. I was told to wait at least two months.

Weather plays a huge part when staining a deck. Was the deck totally dry,was the weather humid? The deck is not ruined as it happened to mine as well.I would leave it alone until next season and see if you want to attempt the process of striping and restaining.

We built a deck several years ago and were told to wait until the next year to stain it. We did and have not had any issues. I would just leave it to dry out more and redo it again next year as needed. Hope this helps

Wood was not fully dry even though it appeared it was. Loose grains dry out faster than tight grain. They also absorb stain differently. The tighter the grain, the less absorption. Second coat on the "splotchy" areas may work. Would be better to wait till next year to give the wood time to season.

A test to see if wood is ready to receive product is to pour water on it. If the water beads it is not dried out enough and the product will fail. If the water soaks right in then the wood is ready to be painted or stained.
