Staining a leather stool

My aunt gave me a drafting stool that belonged to my uncle and I want to refurbish it for my craft studio. I'm planning on repainting the metal base and I want to reupholster the top in leather. Because it's going into my craft studio and the seat is the perfect shape, I plan to add my Birdz of a Feather logo (seen in the picture on my cabinet) onto the leather seat.
Has anyone had experience working with two colours of leather? Should I stitch together white and black leather to make up the graphic or should I paint the graphic right on the leather itself?
If I paint it, would I start with black leather and add white or vice versa? How do I paint the leather without getting bleeding. What kind of paint do I use?
Any advice would be much appreciated - and you'll eventually see the results posted to my blog!

Hometalk has lots of sites that encourage painting leather and fabric furniture. I've read that chalk paint works, as does pure acrylic paint. Sanding the painted surface is encouraged for flexibility.

I believe you could put a coat of something that would seal the leather with a clear coat like mod podge or spray with a clear shellac then paint with acrylic paint and seal again with same finish I'm an artist and I have found there's not to much I can't paint on hope this helps you

There are companies that can make your logo out of vinyl and it will adhere. Look around your area market for sign makers. There is a company also called UpperCase Living (like Tupperware reps) that could help.

Several years ago I painted Dogwood Flowers and Leaves on a Deer Skin Bible cover. I was a bit daunted by the task but decided to just go for it. I used acrylic paint and it came out beautifully, with no bleeding at all. It still looks beautiful. My only concern with your stool is that, if you use it regularly as a seat, the acrylic paint may wear off. As far as the color of leather or using 2 colors of leather, the best advise I can give is to start with black leather and paint your logo on the leather with acrylic paint, outlining the black side with white and the white side of the logo with black. When painting, it's easier to cover a dark color with a light color than it is to cover a light color with a dark. I hope this helps. Good luck with your project!

I'd say start with white leather and paint the black bird on it. tandyleather.com has several skins in white. They also have several types of dye/paint. Not sure if there is lightweight tooling leather that could be used for a seat cover. But I think it would look really great to "cut" the design into the leather then paint or dye it.

Thank You Deanna Nassar - I was thinking it would look great to cut the design into the leather too but I've never done that. It's definitely something to look into!

You really cant paint on this type of leather. I work in a leather shop and for paint to stay on leather, it has to be untreated before painting and sealed after. The best way would be to fashion a patch of your logo and then attach it to your stool.

Hi Lynn - I actually have a piece of white leather I'd be using (not what you see in the picture) so I'm going to source some leather paint and try it out first if I do decide to paint. What product would you use to seal it if I did decide to paint it?

We get the spray at Tandy Leather and there are various types. It depends on whether you want a shiny surface or matte surface. As for the paint we use, it's the same thing you can get at Wal-Mart in 2 oz size, it's Apple Barrel brand. Comes in great colors and after sealing, lasts nicely. For a seat, give a couple extra coats of sealer, letting dry good between and you should be good.

Thanks Lyn - just to clarify, is the spray you get at Tandy a paint? And is it the same brand that you also get at Walmart? What do you use as a sealer? Is there one in the Apple Barrel brand that you used?
  • Lyn Lyn on Sep 10, 2016
No, the spray I get at Tandy is a sealer and will help prevent the paint from wearing off. I'm not at the shop and can't remember the name of the sealer, just know the one I use the most has a white label. It's the matte finish. I hope this is helpful.

There is a product from Heirloom Traditions Paint, called RELUV. You just cover the old leather with it, and it makes your leather look like new. Go to their web site or FB page, and I believe there is a video on YouTube that shows you how its done. It is amazing..
