@KMS Woodworks thanks kms I will try. I am terrible at figuring this out
  • It would help if we had a pic... If you are going to make your own shutters then think about cutting out a design such as a circle, heart, your initial, or any other design and let the color of the house shine through? Paint the shutters a contrasting color from the house and trim so that they can stand out. Black or a dark stain would be good as it would also ground your house a bit. Depending upon the look you want a cottage type shutter. Shutters could be stained dark and add black wrought iron accents. You want the shutters to compliment your home. http://www.sashuttermill.com/SAShuttermill_homepage.html check out this site to get ideas. Good luck!

the door is now white trim also . was thinking either stained cedar or painted board and battan style? any ideas?
    • @Terry S The battan style would look great with your home. Embellishing them with wrought iron and other hardware would really dress up the front. I would stain a board and paint a board in a color that you love and hold them up against the house to see which you feel dresses up your home and gives you the look you want. Stand in the yard and at the street different angles too. Everything looks different from afar or up close. I would also think about dressing up your columns. Your home is so cozy that the little things will make it so much more inviting.

Is that roof white??? I would go with some historic colored grey brown for shutters and then a different color for door- If you have stonework around- try and pick up some color from the stones- all I've read say shutters ought to be a different color from the door- The door could be an evergreen- or bright stain.

the roof is the same color as the trim .kind of goldish (steel). the door is white and the storm is white

I agree with some of the others that light (white or gold roof type color) would work the best
