I've used a lavender based powder on one of our dogs a few years back. I work great and id not irritate her. We are lucky in mountain here as flea ( and mosquitoes) are pretty rare.

I need advice on how to keep fleas off my little dog and out of the house?
  • Diatomaceous Earth found at Home Depot in a bag on the bottom shelf at home Depot. Frontline Plus is a great product and one that after 2 years highly recommend. I tried everything and I live in Va where fleas and ticks are a huge problem. Look at another post I went into detail. Ridding the house of fleas takes a thorough cleaning because fleas lay thousands of eggs which hatch in a matter of 3 days to a week so you start all over again.
  • I pasted this from my response to another post: We have 2 cats and 2 dogs~an Australian Shepherd and a JackFox Terrier mix and fleas are a big problem for us because our dogs love to be outside. Tried everything to avoid going to vet but nothing at the stores worked for fleas or ticks (thought vet was more expensive). Went to vet and bought Frontline Plus ($17) and it was cheaper at the vet than at PetSmart! plus I called Frontline and they said they do not sell directly to stores only vets so you are not guaranteed quality at the stores. It works great. The fleas also lay eggs and they hatch at different cycles in the house. A thorough cleaning which includes vacuuming everything after applying either diatomaceous earth which I finally found only at Home Depot here In Va on the bottom/floor shelves of the bug spray section or a mixture of baking soda and borax mix in a shaker and coat the carpets and rugs and let sit for a couple hours then vacuum. You also spread teh diatomaceous earth outside on the areas the dogs roam or use lime to do the same thing (learned this one from Catherine another gardener here on Hometalk). So far using Frontline every 3 1/2 weeks has worked. Still have fleas that get on them but the frontline Plus takes care of them. Wash all bedding too and any blankets. Flea eggs will be everywhere. Good luck
