This is a side-yard makeover at our rental house. We were able to do it for FREE! I think what we did made such a HUGE difference in the overall appearance!

Thanks @Douglas Hunt . I am amazed how much free sod there is on Craigslist! It goes fast though, so you just have to look often and call quickly. In this situation, a landscaper was taking sod out of someone's yard in order to put in garden boxes. There were about three pick-up loads. I only needed about 1/2 a pick-up load!
