There are not many vegetables that do well in the shade. You can plant leafy vegetables like spinage or greens. Think of fall plants when planting vegetables in the shade.

James does it matter when you plant (season) and is best to do seeds?

The upper limbs of my neighbor's figs shade the lower limbs - but they still produce lots. I'd add figs to the list.

Concerning when to plant veggies, if I remember correctly, Walter Reeves once said something like, "When you go into the backyard with a T shirt and you can sit in the yard and be comfortable, it's time to plant summer veggies. When you go in the back yard barefoot and no shirt and be comfortable it's time to plant cool weather veggies. Correct me on this one Walter. I have done seeds. But for just my family I only need a few plants and sprouting a bunch of seeds seemed like overkill. I like buying the young plants, so I can see how healthy they are.

I can't seem to expand any of these comments so I'm not sure what all James is saying but my brother-in-law has a saying that works almost anywhere: "When the leaves on the oak trees are as big as a squirrel's ear it's time to plant."
