This has come up in a flower bed I haven't tended this year. It's up to about 4 ft. now. It is just one lone stem with the leaves all up the way up and down. I am just curious.

Does it have thorns? It looks like a Bois d'arc tree. I have those sprout all the time as I use Bois d'arc for pest control in my attic and in the landscaping around the house.

Bradford pear sapling. They start out as a straight limb and will bush out into a tree as it grows.

I don't know, but it is growing everywhere here in Southern Ohio. strangles out everything. we've tried for years, since moving here to get rid of it and haven't found a way yet. we didn't have that problem when we lives 30 miles up river.....

Thanks very much for the help. So it seems I probably have a Bradford pear growing in a flower bed rather close to the house... Next question, if I dig it up and transplant it now in September before it gets any bigger, will it live?

move it after your first frost or 2 before the ground freezes, water in well, mulch, and water during dry periods if u live where it does not freeze the ground. Plants grow roots in the winter, tops in the spring and summer. shold do well as these are a very tough plant.

Yup it is those invasive awful Bradford Pear tree's that everyone plants cause they grow fast and flower in spring. Kill it quickly, it has thorns bigger and will take over a bed quickly.
