Making an island that converts to a kitchen table

Hi all! I have a bit of a dilemma. We love the home we just bought, but we're finding it difficult to figure out a good place for us to eat. The kitchen is too small for any table that fits even just 3 people, and the living area isn't really big enough to accommodate both the sofa/tv area and a dining area. Since I also don't really have much counter space, I thought a convertible island would be great, and I can also have the trash and recycle bins built into that, so that'd free up even more floor space. HOWEVER...and there's always a however...in order to use that as counter space, the chairs or stools (or whatever) can't be in the way. And I won't have a place to stack them in this tiny kitchen. I've posted a pic of something similar to what I'm thinking (it's an older Broyhill unit), but this is just a possibility. Does anyone have any brilliant ideas?

Possibly a couple of nice wooden folding chairs/stools could be hung on the sides where the towel racks are. You might even paint them a nice color or make them a piece of art.

Hmm, a couple, maybe. It's something we'd considered. We also have a snatch of wall that might be a place for that. Thanks for the input :)

I was going to suggest putting them on the wall as well, near the kitchen, in a porch or garage. In my cottage, I have one near my hall, 2 at desks, and 1 in the L/R. Another option would be a bench from your bedroom/dining room/ L/R (used as a bench, room/area divider/coffee table).

They make a folding table that stores the chairs inside. You can pop the sides up for eating or food prep, and fold them down when not in use.

What about a bench that could be pulled up to the table?

A bench built to fit over the countertop (possibly pegs to keep it from sliding off).

Hi Dayna: when I was condo shopping, I loved a small condo that had the VERY same situation. Sadly, I didn't buy it but I was going to use an old Duncan Phyffe table (the kind that the leaves hinge down when not needed) and use that as my "island" and eating area. However, I had the same problem re chairs. Since there was only the two of us, I was just going to use the table/"island" as a buffet and buy two TV tables for the two of us to eat off. If family came, then we usually had buffets anyways, however, I realize many people really want a dining table for all family members to congregate around. If you are older with just your husband, would TV tables be the answer for you? I'm referring to really nice solid ones; not light weight cheap things.

What about Folding chairs/bar stools. I saw a tiny house with them hung on the wall. The bottoms were painted/stenciled with plant designs. perhaps like this http://www.improvisedlife.com/2014/03/18/mini...

Hi Dayna: If you have a center table in your living room that is made of complete wood then you can do the following. Measure the length of the table legs and width of the table. get two wooden planks that matched the width of the table and 1 or 2 inches less than the length of the table. attach these on either side with strong hinges and attach wheels to the table legs. at the center bottom you can make a box in which you can store dining table accessories. you can open the planks and lock the table from the bottom to make it a dining table when having food and unfold the same when not required. hope this helps
