Need to make wood posts out of metal poles

My next major home project involves replacing a very decrepit wire fence with a new wooden fence. Because of the angle of incline for my yard, I can't use pre-made panels or vinyl fence, so I will need to build it myself. The old fence is attached to metal poles that are set in and filled with concrete. I would like to create wooden boxes to slide over them that will turn them into wooden posts. My question is this... What size lumber should I use to make a box (with butt joints) to slide over a 2" pole?

1x should be fine, with a square "plug" inside with a hole drilled in center , just a flat 1x top and bottom. Then an additional "cap".

@Spheramid Enterprises Thanks for your response Spheramid, but I don't understand. What is a 1x? I need to create the wood post to attach the rails and pickets to, so I wanted to enclose the metal pole with wood to create that post.
  • Spheramid has great advice and Depending upon the look, you could also use the 6' single pickets at Lowes or Home Depot. At Lowes there are 2 different thickness and would do the trick as well. I use fence pickets for many garden/decor projects now because lumber has gotten so expensive.

    • @Sarah I should have been specific~build the box that is to go over your steel fence posts already there out of the pickets you will be using for the fence. If you predrill holes you could make strong boxes as Spheramid ent has suggested.

Sorry, carpenter talk, "1x" is One by, like 1 by 4 or 1x6 , and then ya have 2x which is like 2x4 and 2x6..etc. so make a long box with ends, of either 1x6 or 1x4 and inside have a similar block with a center hole to drop down over the post. Then cap it to keep crud out.

@Spheramid Enterprises - Oh. You know, when I was driving home from work today it hit me that 1x probably meant just that! (I should never read email before caffiene!)
